Bush embraces same state-based tuition-free plan as Obama
The Hill ^ | 8/24/15 | Ben Kamisar

Jeb Bush threw his support behind a Tennessee plan to give two years of community college to students tuition free on Monday, the same plan that helped inspire President Obama’s similar proposal earlier this year.

“We’ve got to make sure that we can get a four-year degree done in four years,” he said in answer to a question Monday during a press conference after a meeting on the U.S.-Mexican border in Texas.

“There are great programs around the country, one of the ones I most admire is a project called Tennessee Promise, where every student that participates gets their community college education, at least for the first two years, debt free, free of tuition.”

Bush added that universities need to “have skin in the game” when it comes to holding up the promise of a four-year degree.

“If kids cant graduate with a four-year degree in four years, there ought to be some payback to their families or to them, or their got to be some support for the loans they’ve taken out,” he said.

Tennessee Promise is one of the programs that the White House said “inspired” President Obama’s recent plan to offer two years of tuition-free community college to all students that meet certain qualifications. The Tennessee program is funded by the state lottery and the first wave of “Promise” students are starting school this academic year.

Obama announced his plan in January in Tennessee, where he applauded the state for its program.

“Now, the good news is, you already do something like this in Tennessee. You call it Tennessee Promise,” Obama said.

“We thought why not just build on what works. So we’re going to call it ‘America’s College Promise.’”

The president would fund his plan through $320 billion in tax hikes.

But Bush has come out against Obama’s federal plan, panning it at a New Hampshire speech as “political [and] poll driven,” according to USA Today.

"Governor Bush supports a state’s right to innovate and find solutions to our education challenges, whether it be in K-12 or in the higher education community," Allie Brandenburger, a Bush spokeswoman told The Hill in a statement.

Bush has been a longtime education advocate and launched the Foundation for Excellence in Education in 2008. He’s a vocal supporter of voucher programs and pitched “total voucherization” during an education summit last week.

But his education stance has sometimes provoked the ire of the Republican base. He’s walked back his support for Common Core standards, instead calling for increased standards without government involvement. But that hasn’t stopped repeated questions on the controversial standards, seen by many conservatives as a federal overreach into local education, on the campaign trail.

Heb Boosh holds many of the same positions as Obama.
He also seems to think he is the nominee already, just as Romney did the last time around at this point in the game.
Makes me wonder mightily whether or not the process is rigged.
(Rhetorical there, it is. Romney was not the nominee by any honest measure.)

The simple fix for this whole university deal...is to allow kids to test out of high school at sixteen (end of the 10th grade), and if they pass out....they get the first year of community college free. We’d downsize every high school in America in a matter of three to four years.

All of these other gimmicks have a cost attached....this is only way that you’d actually save money and give them a year of free college.

Some states permit a student to enroll in a community college for his or her senior year and count the college courses both for college credit and the high school diploma requirements.

“Heb Boosh holds many of the same positions as Obama.”

The Bush’s and Clinton’s are the same people, the Clinton’s are just more brazen with their self aggrandizement,

Obama has a demon, that demon now has the white house, I suspect it wont let it go,

So whether Jeb or Hillary (both of which are fading away fast) is the DNC or RNC predesignated candidates, or ultimately if its someone else,

I believe will depend on who Obamas demon chooses to enter, its visible in the eyes, thats what I’ll be looking for,

Universities have 'to have skin in the game'?

What the H does that mean?

Four-year degrees should be completed in 4 years? Okay, but I have known people who worked on a 4-year degree for decades. I got mine in 3 years. That has to do with individual situations and motivations.

If kids can't finish in 4 years, that is likely because they failed too many courses or failed to enroll in full course loads. Why should parents get refunds, should their 'kid' [most college students are 18+ so they really are not 'kids'] sluff off and fail to complete the coursework in the typical time-frame?

Another Liberal ideal [even though it is Bush's] that is wrought with unforeseen consequences.

It depends entirely on how the college schedules required classes. It really is pretty hard to get a four year degree in four years.

College like health care is priced out of most peoples market because there is a third party paying for both.

The Harvard Endowment is worth 42+ Billion dollars and yet they charge outrageous fees because their clients are either wealthy or government subsidized.

I dont hate on Jeb, I really dont. He is my least preferred Republican, however, and he is at heart, a socialist, like most politicians are these days.

ANYTIME you remove the apparent cost of something from those who consume it, you screw things up. It always happens. Its why Socialism doesnt work, its why our modified socialism that we have in this country is slowly grinding us into the dirt.

I am an advocate of TruCost accounting. That is, everyone is billed/pay fo the actual cost of everything they consume. People need to know these things, they need to FEEL these things, in order to get them to change the behaviors they should.

But I rant and digress....
