Ohio Bill Would Ban Abortion if Down Syndrome Is Reason
New York Times ^ | 08/23/2015 | By TAMAR LEWIN

CLEVELAND — Opening a new front in the abortion wars, abortion opponents are pushing Ohio to make it illegal for a doctor to perform an abortion if a woman is terminating her pregnancy to avoid having a baby with Down syndrome.

The legislature is expected to approve the measure this fall because lawmakers endorsed by the National Right to Life Committee, which supports the bill, make up more than two-thirds of both houses.

Gov. John R. Kasich, a Republican who is running for president, opposes abortion but has not yet taken a position on this bill. Since his election in 2010, he has signed a variety of abortion restrictions, including a law requiring women to have an ultrasound and be offered a chance to see an image of the fetus before undergoing the procedure.

Mike Gonidakis, the president of Ohio Right to Life, said his group had made the bill here a legislative priority because Down syndrome is so recognizable, so easily diagnosed in pregnancy — and so likely to lead to abortion.

“We all want to be born perfect, but none of us are, and everyone has a right to live, perfect or not,” he said. “You go to any supermarket or mall and see these families who just happen to have a child with Down syndrome, and they will tell you how fortunate they are to have those children. Pretty soon, we’re going to find the gene for autism. Are we going to abort for that, too?”

yeah, good luck with that... if it's legal it's legal, not it's legal but.

Kasich has a lot of masters. Be interesting to see if he does the right thing, which is of course to support life.

If Kasich has yet to state his opinion on this, then that means the bidding for his opinion is still in progress.

Merely saying you oppose abortion is not opposition to abortion.

Many children have disabilities or differences. Why is it ok to kill the ones you can test for, but not the kids who aren’t dx’ed until months or years after birth? It makes no logical sense.

I'll fight abortion any way I can: wholesale or retail, with a Bible, a schmaltzy chick flick, a perinatology textbook, a little incremental regulation no matter how modest, or the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials with nooses for the top Sanger-Nazis.

Even a largely unenforceable law is good, because Law Teaches: and let's teach our fellow citizens that to kill a human being because of their disability, is murder. Every time we make them admit "Yeah, we kill Downs kids for the precise reason that we want them dead," their mask slips another couple milimeters.

Expose them for what they are. If nothing else, expose them to themsleves.

India, which prides itself as being the world’s largest democracy and also has legalized abortion, has already stepped in to stop abortion based on gender; I expect we’ll do the same at some point. Over the past few years my children have participated in grade-school graduation ceremonies in which male students clearly outnumbered females, and that was the case for me decades ago. Something is preventing the 50:50 split one would expect...

I’m shocked at the rarity of young dwarves/midgets today compared to a few decades ago; it is hard to hide what is happening there. The Axis lost WWII, but Nazism won - we are creating our master race, and removing certain genes from the gene pool...

For years I’ve noticed we don’t see Down’s Syndrome children anymore. Figured out long ago they were being aborted.

All perfect and pampered and pretty. The Three P’s & a “B” for “Boring”. I had a Down Syndrome baby many years ago. I struggled through. He had some issues and passed away in the recovery room after major surgery. - I’ll see him again; and he will be PERFECT in every way.

Yours is a good point. From a legal point of view, lots of problems.

Our beautiful daughter will be 17 in December. As I was considered an “older mother” at the time of this pregnancy, the doctors demanded that I have an invasive amniocentesis. After researching this procedure on my own, I discovered that the likelihood of having a child with D.S. was very close to the likelihood of a healthy baby being miscarried as a result of the procedure. Despite the doctors’ protestations, we chose NOT to go through with the procedure. I have a cousin with D.S. He will be 39 in a couple of weeks and texted me his birthday wish list about a month ago!! (smile)

If you listen to the language of those that want to abort children with birth defects it is the same language and reasons the Nazis used to exterminate the handicapped in Germany. it is funny the left claim they want a diverse world with people of all types but they don’t because if there is something wrong with you they want to get rid of you before you are born. before anyone can form a emotional attachment to you. it is crazy there thinking because you will see them brag about rescuing a dog with major health problems but they want to abort because they fear the drain on society or on themselves of having a kid with a health problem.

They already have exceptions based on the reason of gestation time.

Point is there are exceptions limits in existing law. Another could be added.
