I have read and heard an increasing amount of bad-mouthing from a plethora of haters

Haters? A US Army ranger calls someone a "hater"? Doesn't smell right. The rest of the story is peppered with jargon to lend credibility. But one word is sooo out of place.

I heard it twice today during interviews with the class, once from one of the girls.
