LA 'black ball' reservoir rollout potential 'disaster' in the making, say experts

LA's scheme to cover a reservoir under 96 million "shade balls" may not be all it is touted to be, experts told FoxNews.com, with some critics going so far as to refer to the plan as a "potential disaster."

*snip*

"Black spheres resting in the hot sun will form a thermal blanket speeding evaporation as well as providing a huge amount of new surface area for the hot water to breed bacteria," said Matt MacLeod, founder of the California biotech firm Modern Moon Farms. "Disaster. It’s going to be a bacterial nightmare.”

When that happens they just redefine “bad results” as “a huge success” —

Kind of like the Universities that so studies for the EPA.

a chrome color would be optimal. —

Titanium White is the best.

Casual observers think that chrome is shiny and reflective. But it is actually gray, half black. Remember that shiny Snap-On wrench you picked up in the sun? Ouch, drop.

Mirror reflection is theoretical max, but can’t get there, so use white.

"I disagree, I believe that moonbeam has never had a problem with balls, other peoples that is, Black or any other color. "

.... I am beginning to think they were green at one time .... and probably had to let a doctor take care of that problem ....

...... However .... unfortunately ... I believe it has now spread to the brain..... And may actually be contagious and spreading amongst all Democrats.

A Snap-On wrench? Whaddaya think I am, a millionaire? Now, if you would have said "Harbor Freight wrench", I could relate to that.

96 million black balls = 48 million eunuchs?

Snap-On ..

Yes, I thought about that a little, but ...

I got a few in 1974, 1/2 inch combination endwrench was about $6.00

Now I think they are about $25-30. But they have not lowered their quality.

When I saw on TV the dumping of millions of plastic balls into the drinking water reservoir, I thought aren’t these the same “experts” saying plastic baby bottles are poisoning babies? If plastic is so bad, why is it ok to do the ball dump?

The reason is .. liberals never ask REAL experts .. because they think all liberals are the true experts. Thus, it’s incompetence piled high on top of stupid.

My first thought was ‘If black car roofs absorbs the sun generated heat and gets hotter won’t that be the same for these black balls?’ Based upon that, the balls should have been white to reflect the heat from the sun.

Careful there, pal. Keep thinking logically and you'll never get a job as a consultant to a big city Democrat mayor.

Titanium dioxide:

“Titanium dioxide is found in the majority of physical sunscreens because of its high refractive index, its strong UV light absorbing capabilities and its resistance to discoloration under ultraviolet light.

This pigment is used extensively in plastics and other applications not only as a white pigment or an opacifier but also for its UV resistant properties where the powder disperses the light – unlike organic UV absorbers – and reduces UV damage, due mostly to the extremely high refractive index of the particles.

Titanium dioxide, particularly in the anatase form, is a photocatalyst under ultraviolet (UV) light. It has been reported that titanium dioxide, when doped with nitrogen ions or doped with metal oxide like tungsten trioxide, is also a photocatalyst under either visible or UV light.[35] The strong oxidative potential of the positive holes oxidizes water to create hydroxyl radicals. It can also oxidize organic materials directly. Hence, in addition to its use as a pigment, titanium dioxide can be added to paints, cements, windows, tiles, or other products for its sterilizing, deodorizing and anti-fouling properties and is used as a hydrolysis catalyst.
