Russia presents Egypt with advanced missile ship

Russia has ‘gifted' Egypt with a new missile corvette that was part of the inauguration of a new Suez Canal expansion project earlier this month, Egypt's army said.

The move by the Russian government to "gift" Egypt the Molniya missile boat is "part of military cooperation between the Egyptian and Russian armed forces" as well as indicative of "Russia's support for Egypt and the matching visions of both countries on the war against terrorism," Egyptian military spokesman Mohamed Samir said in a statement Saturday.

He added that the highly advanced missile ship will be a new addition to Egypt's "development and modernization plans for its naval forces.”

Considered one of the most advanced units in the Russian naval fleet, the ship features multiple armament systems including surface-to-surface missile—the world's fastest naval rocket system.

A group of Egyptian navy officers are set to be dispatched to Russia to receive training on the new missile ship, the spokesman added.

Cairo and Moscow are seeking to bolster defense ties as Egypt’s relations with the US have soured following the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

In June, Russia and Egypt held their first ever joint naval exercise. Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi exchanged visits in February in an effort to strengthen ties between the once Cold War allies.

El-Sisi is expected to hold talks in Moscow during a two-day visit later in August.

The United States delivered eight F-16 fighter jets to Cairo two weeks ago to support "security and military efforts to confront terrorism" in Egypt, which is fighting an Islamist insurgency based in the North Sinai border region.

The delivery was part of a military package that had been unfrozen in March.

Washington also delivered two navy vessels to Egypt in June, doubling Cairo's total fleet of fast missile craft to four.

You can’t just give eight F-16’s to somebody and they start using them. Those planes require probably 150 support people each, plus an astonishing array of logistics support. What we always see quoted is the purchase price of weapons, but depending on the weapon’s useful life and how it is actually used, the maintenance and upkeep can be an eye watering number. Without that logistics, they’ll just be an awesome place to sit and listen to the radio.

As Barack pouts & stomps his feet because the Egyptian military arrested his muslim-brotherhood pal Morsi and either arrested or deported his pals.

Project 1242.1/1241.8 ‘Molniya’[edit]

Project 1242.1 and project 1241.8 Molniya (”Lightning”) are further developments of the Tarantul family of ships. The two projects has been modified and rearmed with modern missile systems like the Uran-E and are more capable ships than the Tarantul types.

The ships are built by the Russian Vympel Shipyard.[1] Russia received at least one boat for trials in the 1990s and in 1999 Vietnam ordered two vessels. Vietnam is currently the main user of the Molniya class, with two Russian made ships and two locally built ships.

Vietnam started its own production line of 1241.8 Molniya ships with the assistance of Almaz Central Design Bureau in Russia. The first two locally built ships were delivered on July 2014 and four more are expected to be delivered.

The Vietnamese ships are armed with 1 AK-176 76mm gun, 16 Uran-E anti ship missiles, 4 Igla-M air defence missiles and 2 AK-630 close in weapon systems. The Vietnamese ships are also larger at 56.9m in length and a maximum displacement of 563 tons.

They have a range of 1,700 nautical miles (3,100 km; 2,000 mi) with 44 crew members on board. The Indian Navy ordered 4 further modified 1241.8 tarantuls, this order was later reduced to 2. These last two ships of the Veer-class are armed with 16 SS-N-25 ‘Switchblade’ / URAN E Missiles, 1 OTO Melara 76 mm instead of the AK-176, and MR 352 Positiv-E (NATO: Cross Dome) Radar. [2][3] In 2009 Libya ordered 3 ships however, there has been no news since and the reliability of the news source is questionable.[4]

They look like exhaust ports for the turbine engines that can be buttoned up for rough sees or when not under way.

Exhaust Ports are on the top

I just noticed there are two vertical hatches too.

Might be for exhaust of missile exhaust from vertical launch tubes.

See them aft, just forward of the small gun turrets.

Take a look at the video when it is under way. You can see some vapor coming out of the top of the ports briefly.

Those missile tubes look like an afterthought strapped onto the sides. LOL Pretty wild when they are fired off.

Good video, very good anti-ship missile boat but very very weak defenses against aircraft.

These ships would be sitting ducks to any modern anti-ship missile from an aircraft or a shore to ship engagement.

Lots of offensive might, poor defenses. Definitely the Russian Design Philosophy.
