The only reason libs don’t skewer Truman as a “mass murderer” is because he was a dem. If President Dewey had been in office I think there would be a lot of criticism today from libs.
I remember an article, written years ago, that had said when Operations Olympic and Coronet kicked off, they were planning to use up to 7 atomic weapons on Kyushu alone, and send the troops in right after the blast. The Japanese had pulled an Army group out of China and they were digging in at the beaches there.
As for the Emperor - if they HAD tried and executed him, we would STILL be fighting the Japanese. MacArthur handled it right. But there were indeed calls for his arrest and execution, back here in the States.
They’re one of our best allies, and have been since the end of the war.
