What bothered me was some of the rims looked they were burned. Aluminum burns at 6920°F.

Perhaps they were Aluminum-Magnesium alloy?

Just did some more digging. Combustion of magnesium is 1,202F and they still seem to be making aluminum and magnesium rims with the knowledge of the combustion hazard. I assume the weight gain outweighs the risk.

I remember years ago our construction guys would burn magnesium anodes for campfires. I'm surprised they did not go blind.
