I'll never get used to the oddballs and weirdos on Free Republic. Sure, there are plenty of nutty Liberals out there, but there are just as many kooks on our side.

There are actually TWO people on this thread that have stated that they haven't had air conditioning in their homes in decades. WTF?

From no air conditioning to other Freeper weirdos that haven't watched a damn movie in the past 30 years, to some folks that can't so much as make a ham sandwich or cross the street without quoting scripture, our side certainly has its kooks.

Out in dry areas like Nevada and Arizona, Swamp Coolers are used as the low humidity makes air conditioning inefficient. I learned that when I was at Ft. Huachuca, AZ; however my quarters didnt have either AC or a swamp cooler, just several fans.

Why does not having air conditioning make you a kook?

Or not liking movies or ham sandwiches for that matter?

My house was built during World War I, obviously without air conditioning. Nobody thought to add it (including me) until my furnace died and the package replacement deal made it a no-brainer.

Of course I’m in Pittsburgh, where summers aren’t exactly Houston or Phoenix. It should be the individual’s choice...not the Pope’s or a global government.

I’ve just turned 50 and grew up without air conditioning. Coming home to a hot house in the afternoon was unpleasant, but nights were nice. The breeze, the outdoor night sounds, even the scents. Of course this was outer suburban verging upon rural, with a whole house attic fan.

People do tend to keep their homes almost refrigerated as do offices and businesses. It’s their right, imho. But, the older I get, the less I like a frigid, air conditioned space in hot weather. I have mine at home set on 75, and would do without on all but the hottest days if it weren’t for the humidity here. You never acclimate to the outdoor temps for one, making it more miserable than it would be otherwise.

It’s getting difficult to keep the bill below $150.00 a month, too. Not that long ago I could cut my electric bill to less than $70.00 by raising the thermostat to 78 in summer or lowering it to 66 in winter, not so anymore.

Years ago in SF CA I rode my mountain bike across Dianne Feinstein’s front yard and tore up her flower bed with my knobby tires.

Does that count as kooky and weird? I did not quote scripture while doing it.
