Royal Navy's £10billion submarine project at risk due to delays and overspending

At risk: The new Royal Navy submarine HMS Astute

The £10billion project to create a fleet of seven Royal Navy submarines is in yet more troubled waters, a watchdog has warned.

Its report on the Astute-class attack boats reveals costs are still rocketing.

The subs have been plagued by a string of technical hitches and delays since the first vessel was ordered 18 years ago.

And the mammoth project was expected to cost another £87.5million more than planned last year - up from £558.1million to £645.6million.

The watchdog, the Major Projects Authority, has issued an amber/red alert, meaning there are major issues in key areas.

The Authority warned: “The project remains a very technically demanding endeavour and the schedule to deliver the remaining five boats is challenging."

It said while the project remains on time against a revised schedule, “some substantial risks and challenges remain”.

The MPA revealed that forecasted spending on the nuclear-powered subs in 2014/15 is £645.6million – £87.5million more than planned.

Just two of the boats – being built by BAE Systems at Barrow in Cumbria – have been commissioned into the Navy, with a third undergoing sea trials.

There have been years of delays but the MPA said the scheme to replace the ageing Trafalgar-class fleet remains on time against a revised schedule.

The first of the 318ft submarines delivered to the Royal Navy - HMS Astute - ran aground during sea trials off the Isle of Skye in 2010.

Early attempts to shift the sub from a sandbank failed, and damage was caused when a towing vessel slammed into Astute during a later rescue effort.

Other early flaws reportedly included flooding during a routine dive that led to the sub being forced to perform an emergency surfacing, corrosi

I imagine that the degenerative nature of immigrant dumping upon the British Economy is eventually going to scuttle everything — then Britain will be no more and the inmates will be running the asylum.

Something is amiss. You’d think by the time they had 3 in the water (2 in service, 1 in sea trials) and were building the 4th that they’d have the kinks pretty well worked out.

Sorry but start to finish that’s just nonsense.

Perhaps they need more Scottish braggadocio or a rebirth of the Ordovices.

I suppose all those immigrants sitting on the French side of the Channel Tunnel are all coming over for the defense of England. That is, after they break the government from handouts, riots, burning cars, Islamization, and unfettered family growth.

We all know the Western nations do not have the backbone and brutality to combat the growing menace of third world invasion of Islamunists.

There is one thing, and one thing only, that a submarine absolutely must do, and that is to retain a quality called waterproof. Lacking this, this vessel can no longer be called a submarine.

I wonder how many Muslims are working on those submarine construction jobs.

The relevance to this thread is moot: but it’s worth pointing out that the widespread assumption that all the migrants attempting to reach Britain from Calais are Muslim is far from the truth. There are many Eritrean Orthodox and Ethiopian Coptic Christians, among others. They’ve even built their own shack church in the temporary Calais camp.

There are no "kinks", at least not technical ones. The problems are financial and administrative. The people who build the subs do a great job. The "value-added" people, the amazing horde of project managers, consultants and contractors waste cash in IMMENSE amounts. I know, I work in the Barrow shipyard. I've seen it happen.

The sea trials thing is a bit much. The third boat (Artful) only sailed yesterday.

Whilst the UK has a Muslim problem, what you said is nonsense.

Most workshy welfare cheats in the UK are white or black of Caribbean descent. If the UK is to destroy itself, then it wont be just Muslims. The white and black ‘underclass’ are most of the crime and poverty problem in the UK.

What I was attacking was this US notion that all the UK’s problems are because of Muslims. Far from it. Even if they are part of the problem.

Difficult to believe and I'm not buying it entirely. The statement about Muslims working on the submarine was in part tongue and cheek. The point was: I hope they don't have Muslims building their nuclear submarines, and the world situation says I have good reason to hope that.

Yea, England has it's chavs and soccer hooligans. But I'm sure I've read several dozens of articles over the past year about Muslim problems, no go zones, car burnings and export of radicalized 2nd generation English citizens of Muslim ancestry, on top of that they have high birth rates of impoverished immigrants, illegal or not, and their dependencies on the generous bribes social welfare programs.

Yes, I was being harsh, Yes I was being a bit over the top, but that's no reason to try and blow smoke up rear-ends.

You can read all you want, I AM ACTUALLY BRITISH, and live in the UK, so I know the score better than you.

Yes, you are right, the UK has some SERIOUS Islam problems, my point was that as 96% of the UK is NON Muslim and 92% white European, most of the UK’s ills are still native. Muslims aren’t even the largest UK ethnic minority, contrary to belief.

I am not blowing smoke, but trying to give you an actual balanced viewpoint from the UK.
