Sounds like something one would do if everything was going just peachy at the company one founded.

Looks like they are setting up to spin off some of the companies. As long as my kid still has a job I am happy.
They are getting all these loser companies away from Google before their failure starts to impact googles bottom line. The first steps basically to bankrupt those duds.
Wow... discriminating against the digits... that totally bytes. Maybe it plans to adopt and evangelize base-26 encoding.
I guess we should be relieved that they didn’t call it Alpha and Omega.
Dayglored and Shadow Ace, PING your lists, too?
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
Next higher corporate level will be called Alpha&Omega.
You read it here first.
Stock exploded afterhours. These guys basically make ATM machines for themselves. Incredible value
Changing a name everyone knows to Alphabet.
This is just stupid.
Tell someone to do a search on Alphabet.
That just sounds stupid to say.
Was this just a joke google is putting out?
Big changes coming at Google.
Great writing...
Separately
But
Apart
As opposed to the more common together but together.
Google will remain Google and focus on core businesses aligned to that brand. Their efforts which are disparate from the core Google brand will be separated under the parent company, Alphabet, and, one would assume, provide an opportunity for those entities to be branded uniquely if/when ready for this marketplace (without the potential stigma of a Google tag for those businesses not well aligned to the public perception of what Google is).
This also allows for a place to move up top leadership talent that had reached their ceiling under the existing structure thus keeping some key players in house.
And this further allows them to move R&D costs into the global ‘Alphabet’ laboratory, apart from Google, which will allow the primary branded entity to show better independent financials since it will no longer absorb those costs.
Hmmn, Alphabet... one way for them to get ahead of Apple in listings.
I think they should name the company “Edge” :)
Talk about no imagination. Could they not have come up with a better name.
Is it just me, or does anyone else take a dim view of allowing corporations to assume trademark over a commonly used word?
Yeah. Next we'll see Samsung restructure as AjaSung to get ahead of Alphabet and Apple.
Something like Alphabit would have been cool
