Donald Trump and Roger Ailes Make Up — for Now
New York ^ | 8/10/15 | Gabriel Sherman

Until Thursday’s GOP debate, Fox News chairman Roger Ailes and Donald Trump had been executing one of the most successful examples of media synergy in recent memory. But the Trump-Ailes alliance — which helped generate a record debate audience of 24 million — has been in tatters ever since Fox's debate moderators peppered Trump with critical questions onstage in Cleveland. From the moment Trump faced reporters in the post-debate “Spin Room," he’s been attacking the network's treatment of him, with special venom reserved for Megyn Kelly.

Now, it appears both sides want peace. This morning, Trump tweeted that Ailes called to assure him that Fox will cover him “fairly” going forward. According to two high-level Fox sources, Ailes's diplomacy was the result of increasing concern inside Fox News that Trump could damage the network. Immediately following Thursday's debate, Fox was deluged with pro-Trump emails. The chatter on Twitter was equally in Trump’s favor. “In the beginning, virtually 100 percent of the emails were against Megyn Kelly,” one Fox source, who was briefed on the situation, told me. “Roger was not happy. Most of the Fox viewers were taking Trump’s side.”

Things got worse for Ailes over the weekend. In a phone conversation, Trump told Sean Hannity that “he was never doing Fox again,” according to one person with knowledge of the call. The anti-Kelly emails, and threat of a boycott by Trump, seem to have pushed Ailes to defuse the war.

-snip-

“Roger wants this to blow over,” another source added. “He’s upset that conservatives are mad at Fox.” Online, Ailes also took flak. Both the Drudge Report and Breitbart News carried pro-Trump headlines.

Smart for Trump not to appear on Fox until tomorrow and let Murdoch and Ailes see what happens to tonight's prime time ratings. Particularly on the Megyn Kelly show.

Nice thing about Trump is that we are finding out who is working for the Washington Cartel.(Thanks for the phrase Ted Cruz).

I’ve heard Mr. Trump’s side of the story, but I’d like to hear Mr. Ailes’ side.

I don’t see an apology in his words as reported by Don Trump.

No, Fox did a great job

first, the mods cleared the air of all the potentially objectional statements or events for all 10 candidates. Megan may have been over the top but her line of questioning was designed to air the problems.

Many here fail to realize that Fox is not a conservative network. It is a fair and balanced network. the fact that the candidates were not mollycoddled and swathed in conservative dress should not have been expected.

Her questioning of Jeb was soft as could be and designed to let him diffuse questions about his background and positions.

Her questioning of Trump was nasty and prosecutorial and meant to take him down.

“the fact that the candidates were not mollycoddled and swathed in conservative dress should not have been expected.”

Agreed. Neither should viewers have expected the transparent animosity toward certain candidates shown by supposedly neutral moderators.

Baier even had a “nuclear option” at the ready for Trump if he ignored all protocol.

The script — which Baier didn’t have to use — took a page from Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” TV show. It went like this: “Mr. Trump, in your business you have rules. You follow rules. We have rules on this stage. We don’t want to have to escort you to the elevator outside this boardroom.”

“We’re hoping we don’t have to use it,” Baier said later. “[But] we’re locked and loaded.”

For anyone embedded with the news team on debate day, it became clear that it wasn’t just the Republican hopefuls who would be on-stage this night — but also Fox News, widely seen as the network most friendly to conservatives. No one here wanted to appear as if they were pitching softballs.

“You can’t let them have that offramp” was Baier’s rule as they hone each line.

Indeed, when Kelly rehearsed a question for another candidate — delivered in the staccato style that adds to her reputation as a tenacious interrogator — a producer at the table said, “He’ll go berserk.” That’s a compliment for Kelly, who smiled.

When asked whether Trump was mad, Baier smiled and his eyes widened.

“I think he was,” he said.

Jimbo

Not only did Ailes call Trump to apologize,

But have you also noticed Ailes has NOT defended Kelly in public?

I wonder if the fake blonde gets the message Ailes just sent?

I wish Trump would let Fox twist a little longer. Fox needs Trump a lot more than Trump needs Fox imho.

Roger Ailes on Friday:

The reaction didn’t surprise Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes. “Most of the criticism I get is from the right because they assume I’m going to do a certain thing and I don’t necessarily do what anybody assumes,” Ailes said in an interview Friday. “This is an example of that.”

But Ailes limited his input on the broadcast to how it looked on-screen and offering encouragement to his on-air team to be tough and fair. Counter to reports that he’s involved in all things Republican, he said he had no hand in coming up with the challenging questions. He was confident in his on-air moderating team, which he described as “the best we’ve seen in television history.”

I’m surprised that Fox actually figured this out. If you watch Bret Baier’s show and listen to Dr. K and the rest of the Fox Talking Heads all you hear is:

1. The Moderators did a great job
2. 24,000,000 24,000,000 24,000,000 ...
3, Trump is dead after his terrible performance on the debate
4. We are the Fair and Balanced Network

None of the above except item 2 is actually true of course. But it has been the Fox Party Line for several days.

But Ailes is right. Trump could really, really damage that phony Fair and Balaced reputation if he elected to. So Ailes made the right move. Maybe we will see a little less of the “Isn’t Jeb great” stuff.

Once again.

Ailes has NOT defended Kelly in public.

Are you not able to understand the message Ailes just sent to his
employee?

Ailes apologizes to Trump. Yet, does not defend Kelly, his employee.

What part of a rebuke to Kelly by Ailes do you not understand?

Karl Rove has been in hiding for the past 2 days after the Trump poll numbers came in on Saturday.

You have a right to your opinion. It would seem that Hillary Clinton agrees with you. So excuse me if we don’t become friends.

This election is about allegiance to the United States of America, not America haters/Globalists.
