EPA spill: 'The magnitude of it, you can't even describe it'

The city of Durango and La Plata County, Colorado, have declared a state of emergency after a federal cleanup crew accidentally released mine waste into the water.

An estimated 1 million gallons of waste water spilled out of an abandoned mine area in the southern part of the state last week, turning the Animas River orange and prompting the Environmental Protection Agency to tell locals to avoid it.

According to the EPA, the spill occurred when one of its teams was using heavy equipment to enter the Gold King Mine, a suspended mine near Durango. Instead of entering the mine and beginning the process of pumping and treating the contaminated water inside as planned, the team accidentally caused it to flow into the nearby Animas River.

Our tax dollars at work. I bet we never learn the names of the bureaucrats responsible. I bet they'll never be charged. Hell, they probably won't even be fired. If these were private sector workers, they'd be villainized, charged and jailed.

Isn’t this in violation of the EPA laws?

Are they going to fine themselves and pay out billions in court?

I mean, hey, it’s pollution. I certainly don’t want pollution. But the EPA is on the hook for this one.

So, they should pay. Big time.

3 million gal and counting as the site is still coughing up 500 gal/min. 0bama needs to go to jail for this.

Well, if they pay anything it’s with taxpayer dollars, or should I say, your, mine and our dollars. The government cannot lose, can it? Unless the EPA is disbanded, all those folks go jobless and certain ones go to jail. Ain’t gonna happen. A couple of low level room temperature IQ and field types will be fired, and that’s probably it. And the millions/billions it will cost to clean up will be paid by you. End of story.

Wonder if they can figure out it was more contained *before* the EPA got involved?

Well, it will be “too complicated to figure out” I suppose.

Congress should deduct it from their budget.

Environmental engineering was getting underway in the 1970's. I looked at the coursework and it sucked. It was dull and related to mostly field work. I took the structural option in civil. I couldn't believe the pay rates that the Federal government was listing for environmental engineers. It was almost double that of traditional civil engineering work. I knew then they were trawling for engineers and getting the dumbest.

Obama’s fault (though, somehow, Bush will get blamed).

What does “accidentally caused it to flow”, even mean?

Gobbledegook!

The EPA killed both the river and the other rivers below it. Oh, the sheer irony...

I would like to review the permits that the Army Corps of Engineers issued for this, and the EPA’s permit applications.

It sounds like the BP oil rig that the Coast Guard blew over with high pressured water.

Congress should deduct it from their budget.

That's not how this works. EPA will get extra funding to perform ground water sampling (all the way to the mouth of that river), mine site cleanup, etc., etc., etc. Cha-Ching!

Purposeful?

to take down a compromised region?

to further compromise our food sources?

Watch the same contractor working the site for the EPA be given a modification to his contract for unforeseen conditions to remedy his delays and any exposure to Hazardous waste.
