the current drilling process is prohibitively expensive for most interested parties, ranging from $5 to 20 million depending on the depth desired.
Mark Russell, CEO of Hypersciences, wants to change that. His method? Repeatedly firing projectiles into the Earths crust, which Russell claims is ten times faster than traditional drilling. He received a patent last year for his projectile-based system, and was recently funded about one million dollars by Shells GameChanger program to continue his research, according to GeekWire.

the question is does this translate to 1/10 the costs. If so this could easily be transferrred to the oil drilling business to bring down their costs significantly and in a timely way if this technology came onstream in five years.
Oh No They’ll Murder Gaia!!
I can hear the howling already!!
Well why not? We’ve got a spare.
Oh wait...

That should work.
Did Chuckie Schumer approve of this gun?
Is that a “Drill Chuck” Schumer? Or are they going with the more reliable “Norris” model?
There are older and fouler things than Orcs in the deep places of the world.

It’s all fun and games until they split the Earth and then what, huh?
This looks a lot like something that the (assisted late) Gerald Bull would have built, except pointed downwards.
Another (and definitely doable) idea was to build a nuclear reactor in a titaninum/tungsten shell, that when activated would reach very, very high temperatures. Gravity alone would do the drilling through the molten rock. For obvious reasons, this was never built.

Haven’t they seen the movies? There must have been at least five science fiction films since the 50’s with this theme, all ending fairly badly.
China’s gonna be pissed off if we start shooting big guns at them though the erf..
Libs screamin’ EARTHQUAKE crosses my mind. You think they screamed about fracking?
Thanks for the article. I know a bit about this endeavor...
I’m thinking new bunker busting technology.
