As Syrias civil war enters its fourth year, its become something of an open secret that ISIS, for all their bluster and Hollywood-level video editing capabilities, are at best an unhappy side effect of efforts to train and arm the Syrian resistance and at worst, are a "strategic asset" funded and supported by coalition governments.
In other words, there is indeed a geopolitical chess match going on here that will have far-reaching consequences when the blood and dust settle, but it has nothing to do with ISIS far-fetched quest to establish a Medieval caliphate and everything to do with installing a government in Syria that will be more friendly to the interests of the West and its Middle Eastern allies.
ISIS will remain in play as long as they are necessary, but once the time comes for the US to clean up the mess left by Syrias three-front war once and for all, that will be all she wrote for this particular CIA asset. Until then, everyone apparently gets to use Islamic State as an excuse to pursue their own political agenda, as evidenced by Turkeys new war on "terrorists." Not wanting to miss an opportunity to justify what would otherwise be a rather brash declaration, Russia is reportedly ready to send in the paratroopers should Syria request Moscows help in battling terrorist elements. Heres more via Tass:
"The Russian Airborne Troops are ready to assist Syria in countering terrorists, if such a task is set by Russias leaders, commander of the Airborne Troops Colonel-General Vladimir Shamanov told reporters Tuesday."

The report from TASS would be in line with rumors over the weekend that Putin and Erdogan had a major argument over Syria when they met Aug 1st, after Erdogan said Putin may "Give up" on Assad last week.
Ivan threatened to send in paratroopers during one of the Israeli-Arab wars as Israel came close to Damascus.
This is a response to the news that came a few days ago that the US would act as the air force of the Syrian opposition.
Of course Putin was pissed.... this is his response.
Obama, always on the side of the worst faction.
Doesnt Russia still have a Naval Base in Syria?
“Doesnt Russia still have a Naval Base in Syria?”
Yes, it’s a shared base in Tartus.
They maintain a squadron of light ships there, and it’s the main point of Russian logistical help for Assad.
Earlier this year, they sent in two hundred Spetz to increase security in Tartus.
Yep. Somehow, the idiots in the media who've been pushing the "Russia abandoning Syria" stories since May, have all overlooked that fact.
In their defense, there has been some conflicting stories out there, from “Unnamed sources”, saying the Russians were pulling out of Tartus, or intended to pull out of Tartus.
No reason for Putin to pull out now. He has secured Iran and even made a profit. The eastern defense is solid. Time to increase the western defense. The Obama/McCain shared Roman Senate presidency is horrible at chess.
Exactly what I was thinking. Where have we heard the tune before? Just need the Chinese to march across Asia.
Actually, Assad and Putin have a hand too in the creation of ISIS. They did not want a legitimate revolution to take over, so they supported terrorist elements in order to force Syrians who did not like Assad to stay with Assad.
The same thing was done in Chechnya.
