Trump: Shut Down the Government Over Planned Parenthood

Donald Trump says that he supports shutting down the government to defund Planned Parenthood in the wake of a series of controversial undercover videos of organization officials.

The Republican presidential contender was asked on The Hugh Hewitt show Monday night if he supported the move. "Well I can tell you this: I would," Trump replied.

Planned Parenthood has been under attack from Republicans over videos that show officials discussing the sale of fetal tissue for medical research. The pro-abortion rights group argues the videos have been heavily edited and are misleading, and that it only accepts compensation to cover expenses.

A procedural vote on the issue was filibustered by Democrats in the Senate on Monday.

Republicans were badly hurt in 2013 by the government shutdown, which was triggered by an effort to defund ObamaCare.

Republicans were badly hurt in 2013 by the government shutdown, which was triggered by an effort to defund ObamaCare.

Trump said he also supported the move to defund ObamaCare in 2013.

"I was also in support if the Republicans stuck together you could have done it with ObamaCare also, but the Republicans decided not to stick together and they left a few people out there like Ted Cruz," he said. "You know, they left a lot of the people that really went in and wanted to do the job and you know what? If they had stuck together they would have won that battle."

"I think you have to in this case also, yes," he added.

Trump's statement is sure to put more pressure on Republicans to back defunding of Planned Parenthood, especially as his remarks come days before the first GOP debate.

Trump has led a series of polls measuring the support of GOP presidential candidates.

Nice statement ... but it isn’t specific.

A little bit of additional background on the quote ...

A group of conservatives in the House have already pledged not to vote for any government funding bill that includes Planned Parenthood, creating the potential for a high-stakes battle against the White House this fall.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has pledged that there will be no shutdowns on his watch, but Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) — a leading force behind the effort to defund ObamaCare in 2013 — is stirring the pot with talk of action.

“I believe we should use every and any procedural tool available to defund Planned Parenthood,” Cruz, who is running for president, told reporters before Monday’s 53-46 vote on defunding.

Asked if it would be worth shutting down the government over Planned Parenthood’s $528 million a year in federal funding, Cruz shifted the focus to Democrats.

“I think that is an excellent question for you to ask every Democrat, if they’re willing to try to shut down the government in order to force continued taxpayer funding for an organization that has now been caught on film apparently repeatedly admitting to multiple felonies in buying and selling body parts in direct contravention of federal criminal law,” Cruz said.

A handful of other Republican senators also signaled that they might not support a funding bill that includes Planned Parenthood.

That one was never achievable, and worse, the point was totally lost on the public. NO ONE thinks that was about defunding PP. They think it was a vote on a highway bill. Very poor tactically.

Yes, then the R’s won the next election! The next election many more R’s were added, after the government shutdown that everyone said will really hurt the R party. Stupidos.

...and thank God I'm recorded on air and on the internet as having predicted JUST THAT while Cruz' filibuster was going on. My work on the filibuster in 2013 landed my two on going national gigs. I bet you had it figured out then too.

Cruz "shifted the focus to the Democrats." Again, I appreciate the goal and the sentiments, but it's hardly as clear as Trump saying "I WOULD SHUT DOWN . . ." right?

I mean, I don't get it. Here is a guy saying exactly what everyone here wants all our candidates to say, and people still make excuses for the other guys who don't say it.

Republicans have controlled the house since 2010. PP remained funded each year. Between 2000 and 2006 they had majority with a Republican “pro-life” president. PP never lost their funding. Did anyone in government know PP was selling baby parts? Yes.

When everyone else made the call, and there's several Republicans that did, many did not hear it.

When Trump makes the call, everyone in the world hears it.

Kudos to those who called early last week.

Kudos to Trump for picking it up off the floor.

WHat does shutting down and defending accomplish? How about sending some of the culprits to the slammer or at least pulling their license to practice medicine. If they are defended some liberal will just take a tax right off. The states investigating for criminal actions are on target.

If GOPee had any Balls they would expose the attempt to eliminate the negroid race as supported by the history of Margaret Sangor writing and relationship to Hitler plus the locations of the clinics and the percentage of racial babies targeted. PP is the epitome of the term “racist” and the PC weak kneed republicans are in the most part supporting it by their silence.

If it’s a strategic limited government, constitutional position, safe to assume, that the road leads back to Ted Cruz.

July 27, 2015-

“Calling next week’s Senate roll call to defund Planned Parenthood a “legislative show vote,” GOP firebrand Ted Cruz said Republicans should do everything they can to eliminate federal money for the group — even if it means a government shutdown fight this fall.”

Boehner/McConnell likes to use it as a club to keep the conservatives from doing anything conservative. The media knows this, so they keep repeating it.

Cosmetics ??

That’s horrible. I have not heard that.

As for the Third Reich playbook... seems that the Left is using that book as an Instruction Manual.

Carly Fiorina said it last night. The 5th video is out today and it is even more gruesome than the other 4. I am disappointed with the lack of moral outrage and passion from our elected representatives. If they can’t get excited about infanticide, then we are finished as a nation. Forget the taxpayer funding issue, this is a moral outrage akin to the Nazis medical experiment. They should be putting these people in jail no matter where the money comes from.

“Unsurprisingly, the first person to suggest a shutdown over Planned Parenthood funding was shutdown junkie Cruz, whose attempts to defund Obamacare led to the 2013 shutdown. Cruz is joined by several social conservatives in the Senate and House—not enough to successfully defund Planned Parenthood, but enough to force a stalemate from Democrats.

Opposing the shutdown on the Republican side: Kentucky senator Rand Paul, who wants to defund Planned Parenthood, but thinks it’s foolish to start a push against it “with your objective to shut down the government,” and South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham, who thinks a shutdown effort would be futile due to the partisan opposition. Fellow candidate and senator Marco Rubio has wanted to defund Planned Parenthood for some time, but has yet to say whether he’d support plans for a shutdown.” via Vanity Fair.

I don’t think conservatives can play the incremental game very well for a couple reasons. 1. Conservatives work for a living and have religious and familial duties. Incrementalism takes a “long march through the institutions.” 2. Once conservatives compromise on anything (which incrementalism demands), they tell the opposition their position wasn’t really right. Conservatives are bound by conviction, not preference. The left can play it because right and wrong always shifts as culture evolves and situations dictate.

Truth is the Republicans and Democrats both are equally vested in the electorate not discovering we can live without them.

Yes. I read that years back.

I watched a show last night on the Military Channel and they again incorrectly identified Hitler as “right wing”.

“shakes head”

Do morons NOT realize “Nazi” = “National >>SOCIALIST<< German Workers’ Party”?
