Batboy, 9, Dies After Being Struck by Warmup Swing During Baseball Game in Kansas

A 9-year-old who was hit with a bat during a baseball game in Kansas over the weekend has died.

Kaiser Carlile, a batboy for the Liberal Bee Jays team, was accidentally struck Saturday at a National Baseball Congress World Series game.

“With the permission of the family, and with much sorrow and a very broken heart, I regretfully inform everyone that Kaiser Carlile passed away earlier this evening,” the team said in a statement.

“Please keep his family and our team in your thoughts and prayers.”

Kaiser was a batboy for the team, which is a summer league for college players.

One of the batters accidentally hit him during a warmup swing as the boy was retrieving a bat, according to team president Nathan McCaffrey.

McCaffrey said he heard the bat collide with Kaiser, who was wearing a helmet, before he took a few steps back and fell.

“Just to see him fall, that’s what crushes you,” he said.

The Bee Jays went on to win the emotional game over the San Diego Waves 12-5 in 13 innings.

When on the ball field one must watch everything all the time. And it applies to everyone out there.

RIP Kaiser Carlile.

Awful.

The kid probably loved being a bat-boy and being around the big players.

"The Bee Jays went on to win the emotional game over the San Diego Waves 12-5 in 13 innings."

That was the important thing, I guess.

Prayers for that poor little guy and his parents.

Also pray for the ball player who was swinging the bat. I'm sure it was accidental and he probably never even saw the kid. But he's going to live with the guilt and shame for the rest of his life.

Minor point.

How did the Bee Jays, presumably the home team, manage to score 7 runs in the last half of the 13th. inning? In the last half of an extra inning, when the batting team scores 1 run, the game’s over. Even a grand slam would have given them only a 4 run win.

The game took place at a tournament (the National Baseball Congress World Series, apparently), so even though it was in Kansas, they were the road team.

What guilt and shame? If it was an accident he should have neither.

Whether or not he "should" he most certainly will. Knowing you killed a little kid, even if it was an accident, would haunt most people for the rest of their life.

"Liberal Bee Jays"

Kind of a strange name for a team. Is Liberal the name of a town? A business?

Liberal is the name of a city in Kansas.

Bee Jays is a reference to Ban Johnson, the first president of the American League. The name pre-dates the....ahem, colloquial...use of the term.

I think it would bother me less if the kid was either doing something he should not have been, or been in an area he shouldn’t have been.

In this case if he was just on the field doing work, it would bother me more.

Maybe time for a name change. Clinton may start attending the games.

I submit that it could cause PTSD.

Certainly not should - but could.
