Vigilante king and his Uber-style law enforcement squad [New Orleans]

MEET Sidney Torres IV, the suave New Orleans businessman who is taking policing the city’s crime-ridden streets into his own hands.

The wealthy real estate developer was sick of the painfully slow police response to widespread gunfights, theft and drug offences, so he created an Uber-style app to clean up his neighbourhood.

He bought a fleet of black Polaris Rangers, fitted with blue flashing lights and iPads to deal with requests, and hired off-duty police officers as his team. The former waste disposal mogul, who managed a network of garbage trucks, told The New York Times: “I’m handling crime the same way I did trash.”

Hey Mayor For Life Bloomersberg. Do some good for a change. Follow this guys lead and use some of your cash to clean up N.Y.C. Maybe buy guns for all of the good guys and let them carry. Moneyed people in Detroit, Chicago, etc might follow you. Then you would be a real hero.

And no wonder. I used to frequent N.O. on business. Twenty years ago a cop’s salary was $12,000 per year. No wonder they turned to crime to augment their pay.

Also, when I moved to Houston in the late 60s, the Harris County sheriff, Buster Kern, patrolled the Houston streets at night in his limo with a 12-gauge.

I wonder if the people in New Orleans think he’s conservative enough. Or if they’re checking out his twenty year old statements to see how conservative he was then. /s

Bravo! Free Market non governmental action producing meaningful results. Prepare for strident response from Obama-ites who thrive on destruction of moral and civil order.

The lesson I take from this article is not that we must be cautious in the presence of vigilantism to protect civil rights. I came away believing there is ample room and much to be gained from privatizing many government functions, policing not the least of them.

We should be privatizing education, incarceration, road building-the list is limited only by our imagination and our ability to set up and oversee standards.

The criminal justice system in our country is broken. Vigilante justice will begin to increase as a result of the governmental dysfunction.

“...limited only by our imagination and our ability to set up and oversee standards.”

Can not the same be said of Public education, incarceration, road building, etc.?

Our ability to set up and oversee standards seems to be lacking.

If we aren’t careful, we’ll get the equivalent of HOA’s for education, incarceration, road building, etc., and we all know how we love HOA’s.

Torres wouldn't be involved in police work if Mitch Landrieu hadn't pissed him off. After lodging a legitimate complaint against the city for lackluster police work in his neighborhood, Torres was told by the mayor "...you have plenty of money, try doing it yourself". So Sidney did just that.

I guess Mitch is too busy with his crusade to rid the city of all things Confederate, to pay attention to the basics of running a city that depends heavily on tourist dollars.
