If he paid thousands, it was likely to engage in a lawful hunt.

The farmer and the Professional Hunters and guides should be the ones to keep him out of trouble--it is their licenses on the line.

Yeah, the dentist screwed up in the past, but I would think that would make him even less inclined to create an international incident and be a white man risking being stuck in a prison in Zimbabwbe when it just doesn't cost much more (if any) to have a lawful hunt, with the correct permits and licenses, with all 'i's dotted and 't's crossed.

He lured him out of a famous animal sanctuary. This was not his first rodeo. He also was in trouble for fishing without a license before the incident with the bear and who knows how many more he did not get caught at.
