A safe space for those people who feel they need it
One of the most gay-friendly universities in the country is becoming even friendlier, by offering to shelter its LGBTQ students from the rest of the school.
Indiana University-Bloomington is opening a thematic residence hall this fall for students who dont identify as straight men or women.
It will have a particular emphasis on transgender students and those who dont subscribe to conventional gender distinctions, the Herald-Times reported, citing GLBT Student Support Services Office Coordinator Doug Bauder.
IUs Residential Programs & Services (RPS) is less specific than Bauder. It says the so-called Spectrum area, housed within another dorm, is designed to make all students of all gender and sexual identities feel comfortable and supported, including allies, meaning supportive heterosexuals.
Spectrum uses shared locking, individual bathrooms, according to its RPS listing. The Indiana Daily Student reported in December, as Spectrum was in development, that it was specifically placed within a preexisting dorm that didnt have a single-gender arrangement, given that its residents are on a gender, identity and sexuality spectrum.
Spectrum has a connection with the Gender Studies department at the school and a direct partnership with Bauders office, RPS says.
Students who live in the dorm will enjoy opportunities such as forming a delegation to the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference and attending campus events such as a campus film screening, guest speaker, Kinsey art exhibit, etc., RPS says.
Recent winners in the Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show include an artist who made a self-portrait of her own sexual intercourse and climax, and another who designed a wooden sculpture of male genitalia in the posture of a rodeo bull.
We're going to have a particular emphasis on transgender students and those who dont subscribe to conventional gender distinctions ...
Gee,weren’t we all told, repeatedly, that segregation is a bad thing.
Maybe white males should have their own dorm——they probably feel threatened these days.
.
When I went to school, co-ed was considered “edgy”
I don’t necessarily think this is a bad thing
This is a good idea. You leave me alone, and I’ll leave you alone.

WTH? Their minds are not what I would call “normal”.
I have no problem with this if they allow straight people to self segregate..... the hypocrisy in this is great. the LGBT. wants to break barriers but when push comes to shove they put them up.....The only reason why they want separate dorms is that they want a place where there roommates wont object to them having sex in there room.
Keep the freaks in their own pen.
Hi, I’m a cisgender transvestite genderqueer transitioning to a goat form. After all, species is only a social construct. I will need a bathroom with a toilet, urinal and trough please! I demand a proper bathroom you bigots!
So, it’s bad when whites want to self segregate into their own safe space? Logically speaking, what’s the difference?
More money for some other charity, as an IU grad...forget ‘em.
I seriously think this is a very good idea.
Mentally challenged students should be kept in separate quarters.
They, of course, won’t be happy with this, and will insist on living, and taking over all dormitories.
Let them build bigger and better closets.....as long as they stay in them.
Conventional thought in Bloomington. Only people who get married are the gay couples. Everyone else cohabitants
“I’ll take win-win for $1,000, Alex.”
When do the lawsuits begin for giving a paticular group elevated status and privileges over others. They’re all about equality, right?
At least it explains their abysmal record in football each year.
