Dont mess with Texas armadillos.
That is the lesson that one local man learned the hard way when he landed in the hospital with a bullet wound after trying to shoot one of the hardy armor-plated critters.
Officials in Cass County, Texas, say the man suffered a graze wound to the head when he fired at an armadillo and the bullet ricocheted off the mammal's rigid protective covering and struck him.
The bizarre incident took place at around 3am Thursday in the 27,000 block of Highway 77 in the Marietta area, according to a report from KLTV.
The shooting victim was taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
The hapless gunman has not been named. There is no word at this time on the armadillo's status.
The incident was classified by sheriffs deputies as an accidental shooting.

I shot at one when I was young, and that thing jumped 12 feet in the air. You wouldn’t think with short little legs and all that armor they could do that.
A much more accurate headline than the article has LOL!
An earlier posting here is anyone interested in reading the comments there on

I’ve heard that’s why they are such common roadkill, they jump right up under vehicles. I’ve never lived around where they are but always struck me as a really cool critter. Kind of an armor-plated possum!
The Armadillo's status is that it is laughing it's A$$ off!
.
In Louisiana about 75% of them carry leprosy.
They’re cool until you learn that.
That is what usually kills them on the highway. You can can try to avoid one by straddling it, but as your vehicle passes over it the armadillo will usually jump.
We are seeing a lot of them here in Tennessee now.
Something my TN raised girlfriend says she never saw growing up.
I don’t believe these stories. The man missed the armadillo and hit a rock and the bullet bounced back. The calibre of the ammo is not discussed or the type of weapon used, so one can’t really judge.
I remember them making a very satisfying POPing sound when I ran over them with my truck.
The trick was to miss them with the steers and hit’em with the drives.
Probably a .22 Should have used 7.62
After seeing this picture, you're probably right.
Possum on the half-shell.
LOL I can just hear you saying this. You’re right.
Served the idiot in the story right, though. That was just pure damn meanness. Who eats armadillo meat?
