There are many places that do NOT pay their wait persons minimum wage. In many places, wait persons are paid as little as $2 and change, per hour. That’s it. TWO Bux and change! Many people resent tipping these workers because they feel as though the restaurant is expecting the customer to pay the worker’s wage.
Something that hurt wait persons was having to claim tips, and under that rule, the employer is only obligated to pay min wage IF the tips don’t make the difference between the low wage threshold that the store is required to pay, and min. wage.
Many places demand you report your tips to them so that they can take 10% for the cook, and 15% for the bus persons despite the fact that these workers ARE paid min. wage! You aren’t allowed a tax brake for being forced to pay salaries out of your tips! And the customer isn’t even thinking about how the wait person has to release 25% of the tip for other employees.
To ME a tip is a private thing between the customer and the wait person...a thankyou for good service, and extra for extra service. A bribe even. It’s none of anybody’s business what a wait person receives in tips.
A tip is never a requirement. Not to the customer, not to the wait person. A bus person should not expected to receive a tip, but should be thankful and appreciative when a wait person is considerate and thankful for THEIR service.
I’ve had tips stolen by bus people, and was STILL required to tip them! When I worked without a bus person, and bussed my own tables, my tips tripled. Yep..so, I paid the bus person...ME.
When an employer values his staff, and has good staff, the customer is going to be a whole lot more willing to open the wallet. He’s going to be a repeat customer because that facility is a good one...specially since the food is fantastic, the place is clean, and the staff has an excellent attitude.
