While the death of a protected lion in Zimbabwe has caused outrage in the United States — much of it centered on the Minnesota dentist who killed the animal — most in Zimbabwe expressed a degree of bafflement over the concern.
The discovery that Cecil, the star of Zimbabwe national park had been lured out and killed by American bow hunter Walter James Palmer has resulted in online anger and protests at his dental clinic.
Outside Zimbabwe's environmental and activist circles, however, the reaction been muted.
"It's so cruel, but I don't understand the whole fuss, there are so many pressing issues in Zimbabwe — we have water shortages, no electricity, and no jobs — yet people are making noise about a lion?" said Eunice Vhunise, a Harare resident. "I saw Cecil once when I visited the game park. I will probably miss him. But honestly the attention is just too much."
An economic meltdown over the past few years has closed many companies and left two-thirds of the population working in the informal economy while battling acute water and electricity shortages.

Zimbabweans are too busy frying their food in toxic oil they steal from transformers to worry about Cecil.
*sigh* Because unlike millions of aborted black babies, Cecil has a name.
Routinely in Africa, and it goes up and down....but on average, there’s about 250-odd people a year....killed by lions. Actually more people die in Africa by lions than die in the US by mass shooters, on average. This statistic should make you sit, pour a good scotch and ponder upon why anyone should care that much about Cecil.
They act like it’s the Daktari Show, and Doc Tracey is telling Clarence the Cross-Eyed Lion to fetch help after the tree fell on his jeep and Judy is battling the the 40-foot Boa is just feet away.
That, and it pushes the anti-second amendment agenda.
People shouldn't even have guns to hunt.

I could have posted much bloodier photos of a lion attacking its prey but I can use this one just as effectively to show that lions are very much part of the food chain and the food chain always works both ways. Just ask those who have encountered sharks or alligators and lived to tell about it.
Not that I'm condoning the hunting of lion only for sport but if this hunter had butchered Cecil into cuts of lion meat for the grill, I would be fine with that. I might even ask for a cut or two to marinate and put on my Weber this weekend.
Wildebeest lives matter too. But I guess they aren't as "cute and cuddly" as lions so nobody really cares about them.

Cecil ended life better than he would have in the wild. In the wild he would have been killed or driven away from his pride by younger lions when he got old, after his injuries rotted enough or he’d starved enough, the hyenas would have torn him apart and eaten his entrails while he was still alive.
I remember the little flap years ago when National Geographic magazine had a photo essay of starving lions hunting by night during a drought season, with very graphic, close up pictorials of what happens when a hundred pounds of gazelle is divided by two tons of starving lion pride. An offended mother wrote in protest that National Geographic was so longer safe for her children, the Editor shortly replied that it was her prerogative if she wished to use the Lion King to educate her children, but this was National Geographic.
Cecil was a racist and deserved to die! He is from Zimbabwe, right? Zimbabwe was once Rhodesia, right? Rhodesia was name for the greatest racist in the history of Africa, Cecil Rhodes. Since they both have the same name and are from the same place they have to be related... therefore the lion, Cecil, was racist and got what he deserved... Black Lives Matter and all racists must be punished and die!
