For most people in the southern African nation, where unemployment tops 80 percent and the economy continues to feel the after-effects of billion percent hyperinflation a decade ago, the uproar had all the hallmarks of a 'First World Problem'.
"Are you saying that all this noise is about a dead lion? Lions are killed all the time in this country," said Tryphina Kaseke, a used-clothes hawker on the streets of Harare. "What is so special about this one?"
As with many countries in Africa, in Zimbabwe big wild animals such as lions, elephants or hippos are seen either as a potential meal, or a threat to people and property that needs to be controlled or killed.

"Why are the Americans more concerned than us?" said Joseph Mabuwa, a 33-year-old father-of-two cleaning his car in the center of the capital. "We never hear them speak out when villagers are killed by lions and elephants in Hwange."
Mr. Mabuwa, sorry, Americans are concerned about you, unfortunately, you don’t hear it, but we try to give you incentives to try free enterprise. Unfortunately, we need to try it here in America, since America’s Robert Mugabe is trying to make us look worse than Zimbabwe.
I’ve heard it as “Shoot, Shovel and Shut Up!”
I’m most definitely against trophy hunting! Also, this dentist sounds like a jerk in general with a sexual harassment case against him that he settled for big bucks. Sounds like a perv to me and i wouldn’t want to be under with him!
Ok, he’s a jerk....he’s merely one of at least a billion jerks on this planet, why more outrage towards him than any other jerk out there?
I don’t know you should ask the PR company that dropped him.
I noticed that there was not a fee for Lions or Lioness in Zimbabwe. However, there was on in South Africa of $23,000.
So, how did this dentist legally shoot a lion in Zimbabwe?
I do not have a problem in the fact that he shot the lion. I am just wondering why it is not listed as an option?
I guess it depends on the outfit, and the area they operate in.
You can do your own google search ( zimbabwe trophy fees lion ) if you want more info.
I predict Zimbabwe won’t try to punish this guy much, otherwise they hurt their hunting and tourism dollars - the White House is a different story, given that he’s a white male professional - automatic Obama enemy. Would be just like that jerk to play around with this guy like a caged mouse and threaten him with extradition.
That seems awfully repressive. Why aren’t the demonstrators “being allowed space to destroy as well?”
If someone wants to feel bad about this lion, that’s their business. It has nothing to do with planned parenthood or villagers who choose to stay in a place where elephants can trample them.
100,000 elephants have been poached in the last 3 years. Poaching is wrong. Cecil was poached as well. There is a huge difference between hunting and Poaching. Just because I think poachers should be prosecuted does not mean I want guns banned or abortion legal.
Yes, I’ve heard both. “Scoot” was always the more prevalent of the two phrases where I come from, though.
As in “don’t stand there with the shovel... feets, don’t fails me now!”
