Punishment doesn’t stop because of what you say or do. Otherwise everybody would just start crying and promising right off the bat.

A punished kid is still pissed off and stronger ..
A (properly) disciplined kid is spiritually stronger and more complianat to God's way
I can expect the punished kid to get into more trouble
I can expect the disciplined kid to stay out of trouble
