Video: Pinellas man told barbecue smoke can’t leave backyard [NOT in Montgomery Co. MD BTW]

A video of a Pinellas County man being told by an inspector that his barbecue smoke cannot leave his property has been viewed more than 4 million times on Facebook.

Scotty Jordan, 38, posted the video (caution, it contains profanity) to his Facebook page on Wednesday and by Monday morning it had 4,091,474 views and 86,510 shares.

“I didn’t expect it to go this far, but I always believe everything happens for a reason,” Jordan said about the video in a Facebook post early Monday. “God puts situations and life experiences in front of you. It’s up to you to realize them.”

Pinellas County Air Quality sent an inspector to the house after receiving a complaint on Wednesday about an objectionable amount of smoke and odor coming from the property, according to a release from the county.

There have been 15 smoke and odor complaints about the property since September, according to the release. The owner was cited separately by the City of St. Petersburg for possession of commercial grilling equipment in a residential neighborhood, the release said.

In the video, the inspector is seen explaining to the resident that smoke from his barbecue is not allowed to leave his property.

However, in the release, the county says the inspector was not there to regulate barbecue grilling.

the newly wed, the nearly dear, the poorly bred and the very stuped”.

Pasco County (Hudson) takes that to a whole new level.

From the Pinellas website FAQ:

Anonymous complaint
“Air Quality staff do not give out information about the individual who filed the complaint during field inspections. However, in the State of Florida, citizen complaints are part of the public record. As such, concerned parties can access citizen complaint records by coming to the Air Quality in person, or by submitting a written request for a copy of the citizen complaint.”

Backyard BBQ
“Commercial barbecue cookers are not exempt from causing a nuisance odor. If a sufficient number of complaints, representing different households, are reported and an Inspector witnesses the problem, they can issue a Warning Letter.”

Everything’s a matter of degree but the problem is that the laws don’t specify a degree. These kinds regs, which are typically for commercial practices, will be used more and more for things like preventing you from smoking in your own home. Burden will be on the defendant to show that there is no actual harm caused, through the appellate process.

The next time I do bbq’ing, I’ll make sure my smoke will stay in my yard...I might violate building code by putting a dome over my yard.

I would go buy about 1000 lbs of Bovine excrement and hope for a favorable wind after I light the grill.

I heard today (yet unconfirmed) the next utility push will be to meter your AC separately and charge extra for using AC.

Of course. AC is “not sustainable” as per Agenda 21.

I live down the street from an African American lady that has 3 smokers set up on her back porch that is not more than 20 feet from the walking path. When I walk by I can smell the BBQ but there is no smoke escaping. My only complaint is I don’t get to have any .

Could it be the man has an open fire pit because in the vide he makes a comment that now they want me to buy a grill?

Not at all...he comes off (in video) as a pretty cool guy. But I think he has an informal BBQ business going on

ha....funny you should say that.....when I saw that the guy was black I immediately thought the lady across the street complained because he was a black guy making BBQ. You could be right, but that county worker who came to his house is a weasel and it’s a bullshit thing to do. If the guy is actually selling BBQ illegally then send a cop and write him up. I think the lady across the street doesn’t like blacks in her neighborhood and found some worthless county ordinance under which to complain.

How does one provide evidence of “smoke” to a judge? “Yes Judge, I bagged the smoke up in this little baggie. Oh, well it was here, I swear”.

I used to be in Myrtle Beach at least once a week on business and even then there were more and more transplants from the northeast moving in. Some were fine people, unfortunately some were blithering idiots.
