If all else fails, theres always drought shaming.
After the Metro Vancouver area issued Stage 3 water restrictions last week, perturbed residents have turned to social media to publicly shame local water wasters.
Its the first time the area has imposed the Stage 3 restrictions since 2003, which limits people to watering flowers, vegetables and trees by hand no sprinklers or hoses.
Reservoirs levels have already dropped to 69 per cent in the region lows that dont usually come until August.
Bylaw officers have received neighbour complaints and are issuing written warnings and $250 fines for offenders, but some people still arent following the rules.
Hashtags such as #BCdrought and #grassholes have taken hold on social media. A Facebook group called Grassholes was also started, giving people an unofficial place to report residents who arent obeying the restrictions.
The City of Vancouver also has an app that allows residents to report people they believe are abusing the restrictions.

They had to “mow” out a bunch of milfoil for the hydroplane races over the weekend. It was basically late August Columbia River weed conditions in late July. Ironically, the weather was very cool the last two days(will be getting back to normal soon). Also, 8-9 ft sturgeon carcasses reported floating and decomposing along the river banks. The sturgeon are not dying directly due to excessively warm water but because of gorging on salmon until their metabolism gives up. Normally the salmon would continue swimming upstream to spawn but are loitering in this area due to the warm (70F) water and being eaten as a last supper by the hungry sturgeon.
PINGs due to possible interest to you.
Thanks, Steve.
I lived in Portland for 7 years.
I’m always interested in news about the Columbia River.
Here in Seattle, we have had abnormally warm temps for 16 months, and almost no rainfall for the last 3 months.
All of this, according to KOMO Weather News, is caused by the huge “blob” of warm Pacific Ocean water off our coast, which may last another year!
Hard to believe that just 4-5 years ago we had a huge “blob” of record cold Pacific water offshore that caused record rainfall and record cold temperatures.
Hey, Norm, the North American rainforest is dry as a desert this year. My own family in N. Idaho had two fires were burning within a few miles of their very dry timbered acreage. Pray for rain.
Dreadful about the salmon and sturgeon deaths. My daughter and sil in N. Idaho are just a few miles from two fires that were thankfully put out rapidly. Prayer warriors here got in on that and it was amazing how fast the one really threatening fire was contained. They live on several tinder-dry treed acres, so I’m spending the summer praying for rain. .
Zoning is terrible up there and two years ago a strawberry farm was put in just a mile up their 2-mile road. They are using up the ground water, to everyone’s dismay. I would definitely put up #grasshole notifications up and down their property, and I’m no liberal.
Pray for rain.
And liberals had no plan in place to store any water for that event.
I stand by my statement.
