Venezuela could run out of beer by next month

Venezuela could stop making beer by August, as local breweries run out of ingredients needed to produce the country’s most popular alcoholic drink. A brewery shutdown would reduce the country’s beer supply by a terrifying 80 percent, according to industry leaders.

Local breweries say they are down to their final batches of barley, malt and other imported products needed to make beer, thanks to Venezuela’s strict currency controls that have made it almost impossible to purchase supplies. The industry, which is calling the situation an “unprecedented crisis,” is already some $200 million in arrears to suppliers around the world.

“Beer shortages will essentially force our sector to go broke; beer accounts for 70 percent of our sales,” Fray Roa, a spokesman for Venezuela’s National Association of Liquor Store Owners.

Let Danny Glover and Sean Penn share some of their beer with their beloved South American country of paradise. Certifiable, proven morons.

Thanks to Odungas cash infusion to Cuba, Castro will probably bail them out with some of their home brew “Cristal” and throw in a few cigars as well.

How do you screw up something as simple as beer?

Screw up something as simple as an economy.

It’s a bigger deal than most folks here realize. I was in Venezuela 4 years ago and Polar beer was ubiquitous. One big reason is that the tap water is UNDRINKABLE. In fact you see NO water fountains anywhere, not even at the airports. Why? Because the folks down there know it is dangerous to drink the water. Instead most adults drink beer, usually Polar beer, throughout the day. The loss of Polar beer will be felt in a big way down there.

Consuming beer in place of water, when the H2O is too bad to drink, was very common throughout history. Even in medieval Europe, etc.

Throughout history, the main ways to make water drinkable was to either boil it (tea, coffee) or add alcohol (beer, wine)

The push for Prohibition didn't come until AFTER water was made safe to drink. Before that drinking liquor daily was common. Even the Puritans came across with barrels of ale. Oh, and a Baptist preacher (Elijah Craig) invented bourbon and set up a distillery.

Now that could provoke REAL rebellion. But how would rebellion be stoked up, if not for the fuel known as beer?

The middle-class suffers. The underclass supports the government, regardless, and will fight any attempt to overthrow it.

There can be no long-term solution which does not deal with the existence of the underclass.

Too bad so sad. When toilet paper is a luxury item, beer is only for the dictator, his family and friends.

Isn’t communism wonderful.

There used to be "water trucks" that would drive by selling water cooler sized bottles of clean water.

But yes, was the only country I have ever been in where even brushing your teeth with tap water would get you sick.
