Just an FYI...
This article in the Sunday news for Broken Arrow, OK, gives some more information on the family. It claims that the mother was head of the neighborhood association for a while. OTOH, it also claims that none of the local homeschool associations is familiar with the family.
Thanks.
From experience, I know that it can difficult to be involved with a group when you have a lot of young children.
It’s interesting that nothing has been said about their being members of a church. If any of my sons went and killed us all, our youth minister would probably be on the news saying, “I knew it! I knew he was the one!”
:-) Same with our family: Everyone would hear from my sons' youth group leaders right away.
You're right. Good catch! I didn't notice that there was no statement from a church leader. Many people posting comments on the news articles are making assumptions about this family's religious beliefs. They're assuming the family was Quiverfull, for example. Like you said, if that was true, why is there no mention of a church?
And, yes, some families, especially large families, don't join groups at all, and they do very well. They do their own thing. Most families at least take breaks from group activities, which can eat up your time.
This crime is so disturbing on so many levels. It's so coldblooded. Now it's like a puzzle, trying to figure out what went wrong.
It is disturbing. I suppose there will be more details when the young men are indicted.
I want to read something that will explain it in such a way that it couldn’t possibly happen to us, such as that the boys were using drugs or had been diagnosed with some recognized disorder. “Whew, none of my sons is taking Prozac, we’re safe!”
Know what I mean?
Quiverfull is a philosophy adopted by people in a variety of churches and denominations, as well as people who “home church” with just their family. I would have expected all the girls to be wearing dresses in that case, though, and they weren’t in the pictures at the “Daily Mail.”
Yeah, I do know what you mean.
The news is portraying this family as computer oriented. So, I find my thoughts wandering to, "Maybe those boys came across something on the internet that turned them into psychopaths." And then I start thinking, "I hope my kids haven't come across those things on the internet..."
Oh, I see. I don’t know much about the Quiverfull movement.
Maybe it was the motorcycles. They were both wearing motorcycling t-shirts. (j/k)
I was on the Quiverfull email list for a few years. It’s probably all Facebook by now. I “met” some very nice people and some really ... um ... peculiar ones.
actual name for # is "octothorpe".
Really. I still think of it as a number sign.
LOL! So it should really be pronounced “octothorpeblacklivesmatter” :>}
Bttt. I just Googled the story, but there isn’t much new. The two teenaged boys say they had plans to have a higher body count than the Columbine High School murderers.
Still no mention of their belonging to a church. A memorial display was organized by strangers from the community. (Sounded rather self-important, actually, but a nice thought.)
There’s still no clue as to what went wrong with these two brothers. There had to have been some warning signs somewhere - right? Or maybe not... Somehow they were able to plan the attack secretly together. That is frightening.
Meanwhile, the 12-year-old son, Daniel, died a hero. They’re saying the 911 tape was brutal. Those poor children.
We homeschooled. For a few years I held a leadership role in our county support group. We began receiving calls from parents who told us that the school counselors were “suggesting” their child might benefit from homeschooling. In almost all those cases it turned out the child was way behind academically or was a troublemaker.
There was a similar situation where I live, not murder, but a crime that landed a teen boy in big trouble with the FBI. The media all reported that he was homeschooled but I was involved with homeschooling at the local and state level and could not find anyone who knew the boy or his family. Later it came out that he had been expelled from the public school system and had then gone to a private academy in the next county, which after some sort of trouble had suggested he not return after a holiday break. So his mother claimed he was homeschooled.
Twenty years ago, there was a murder case in PA that involved two teenage brothers (and their cousin) stabbing their parents and younger brother to death. So, when I heard this story, I thought of that one.
But, in that case, the brothers had been in and out of trouble for a long time. Also, they were neo-Nazi skinheads, and they were very tall and strong. Their parents and little brother were afraid of them. According to the news at the time, the little brother even told another child that his brothers were going to kill him.
But, the brothers in this case don’t seem to fit that profile, unless there was trouble behind closed doors that outsiders just didn’t know about.
In this case, one of the news stories quoted a neighbor as saying the oldest brother went to school with his son:
Maybe the neighbor misspoke or was misquoted, but the press never followed up on that comment. Whatever happened, there has to be more to this puzzle.
I’m pinging Tax-chick to this post, too, because here’s another article. This one says the children took bowling lessons every Wednesday, and the 18yo brother brought them there each week:

By all accounts, the younger children were sweet and innocent. Still no clue as to what went wrong with the older two.
Oops. Please see the post above which was supposed to be sent to you, not “Kale.” I don’t know what happened with that reply.
The neighbor did not specify when his son went to school with the Bever’s son. It could have been when the boys were younger. I wonder how long the family had been homeschooling.
I feel so sorry for the surviving girls. I hope the one in the hospital heals in body, mind, and soul and that she and the little one can be together.
