MUSIC FOR WALLERIN’

Anton Arensky: Trio for Piano, Violin & Cello in D minor, Op. 32, First Movement

Like so many Russians, Tony Arensky’s problem was vodka – and lots of it! It was a combination of booze and tuberculosis that finished him off at the ripe old age of 44 in 1905. He was a consistent second rate composer, but once in his professional life he got on his tiptoes, reached for the stars and snagged one.

The first time I heard this piece at the Seattle Chamber Music Festival in 1992, my jaw dropped all the way to my chest. I thought I knew all the chamber pieces that involved piano, but I had never heard of this gem. I couldn’t understand why.

Rather than play the pedant and take you through sonata format – which my students should know by heart – I’ll suggest you pour a glass of wine, grab a handkerchief or a box of tissues, and just waller in the music. The Russians base their classical music on great tunes, and this one is a keeper.
