Mahler: ”Blumine”

This was the original second movement from Mahler’s Symphony #1 in D. He revised the work by expunging it completely. It was re-discovered in 1959 in the trunk of Natalie Bauer-Lechner, his first biographer. The symphony is rarely performed with this movement, which is a shame. There are some themes quoted in the finale from this movement, so I’ve always thought of it as an integral part.
