All Jacky Alciné wanted from Google Photos was a space to upload snapshots from his life. But a few weeks ago, what he got from the photo-sharing service was racist insults and a smattering of stories in the national press after photos of him and a female friend were labeled gorillas instead of humans.
That has to be wrong, thought Alciné, who is black, as he shuffled through his library of photos, only to discover that dozens of other pictures were also labeled gorilla. Its unexcusable, said the 22-year-old Brooklyn Web developer. Theres no reason why this should happen.

My MS Word installation is racist. Every time I open a document, it says, “Yasss baaas, dat sho am some fine waddymelon.”
First of all, I don’t believe any of this. Sounds like another phony-baloney made up pack of lies to incite racism.
Secondly - if true - then how and why does this indicate racism in the tech field?
Smells like another racist reverend shakedown of Silicon Valley to hire (non existent) black techs.
I’ve not used Google Photos but I have a hard time believing the story. I mean, does the software scan the image, trying to guess what it is? That is really, really hard.
The digital cameras I’ve used have named pictures things like file_01.jpg, file_02.jpg, file_03.jpg, etc.
I suspect the user himself edited the file names.
This happened a couple of months ago.
Actually, I think a lot of application software is “ageist.” My wife is conventionally “abled”, but internet deficient. She’s pretty smart in other ways, and even admits that if she were younger, she’d probably be into it, but says it’s too late now.
i hate millennial SJWs. i truly do.
everything... absolutely EVERYTHING... is viewed through the filter of their own narcissistic feelings.
It is image recognition software designed to automatically group similar photos together in the same folder. The software names the folders, not the photos themselves. I’m sure it can be turned off.
Then there is the gay key stroke command:
C colon enter
Utter nonsense.
Let me explain how this software really works:
1. The team has thousands upon thousands of stock photos *that have been tagged* with topics. Gorillas are tagged as gorillas. Planes are tagged as planes, but also maybe “sky” and “clouds.”
2. Software analyzes the tagged photos for *qualities* - things like color depth, identifiable shapes, identifiable juxtaposition of shapes. All these qualities are completely objective and simply standard image qualities. NO ONE SAID, “GORILLAS LOOK LIKE THIS.”
3. A new photo is added. The image is analyzed for *qualities*. The a semantic or heuristic network of qualities is created and compared against existing networks. The one with the highest match gets the tag, within a certain confidence level.
So, to be clear, no one said, “Gorillas are dark in color. Gorillas have two eyes. Gorillas have pronounced lips.” A photo tagged “gorilla” was fed into the system and the system determined these things.
I’m sorry that the darker color palette of your photo matches the color palette of a photo of a gorilla, but there is nothing racist done here at all.
Does that version have any cursive fonts?
Ya....we need more zeros in our code!
"What's cursive?"
That’s retarded, sir.
Why haven’t blacks started their own tech companies??
My shadow is racist.
I wonder why haven’t blacks started their own high tech companies...
