WASHINGTON -- After mounting pressure from Democrats, Senate Republicans removed a controversial Social Security provision from an unrelated bill to fund construction of the nation's highways.

Right before a key procedural vote on Wednesday night, proponents of the bill agreed to cut the Social Security offset in an effort to garner support from more Democrats, according to a Democratic leadership aide.

The provision would have saved an estimated $2.3 billion over 10 years by disallowing Social Security retirement, disability or supplemental income benefits to anyone with an outstanding felony warrant being actively pursued by law enforcement.

People who are disabled or draw regular SS or VA disability or any other kind of pension still collect even if they’re in prison. Just for being wanted but not yet found guilty sure shouldn’t stop the checks. And IMO, a person being disabled should have no bearing on his wanted status unless it involves SS fraud.

I understand why they’d still receive benefits. I don’t understand why the fugitives using those benefits aren’t being tracked and areested. Seems a pretty short paper trail to me.

If a fugitive is receiving and cashing SS benefits, why is it so hard to track him down and arrest?

You are a RACIST for asking this question! Next, I suppose you are going to ask why people who have no trouble presenting identification to buy booze, smokes, lottery tickets and applying for government benefits can't possibly do the same to vote.

“So what is the process before a warrant is given, and how long does it take to get one after it is applied for? I would think that if anyone is going to go through the effort of getting a felony arrest warrant and for whom the state has given notice that they intend to pursue the warrant, they would have to spend a lot of time an d money.”

I don’t think the political appointees at Justice or Homeland Security care about the cost (or even the validity) of an arrest warrant.

Wait a minute. A fugitive can get a S.S. check sent to them, but the F.B.I. can’t find them? WTF!?!?!

Now you’re just using common sense. The feds can’t do that.

The actual language may allow this only after a determination that he’s a fugitive, and probably does.
Which would be just fine with me.

The Dems’ complaint was it was taking money from SS. I guess they have a point too, though after the constant looting of SS they’ve done since it’s inception the irony is fierce LOL!

Hope the language is put into a SS bill in future.

Why did we even bother to “take over” the senate. It has done us no good. They vote like dims!!

The majority and leadership are still RINO's voted in by moderate Republican areas, not Tea Party or other conservatives; but they are gaining strength each year. Who did you vote for, and did he/she make it to join the conservatives?

Ted Cruz is my senator, and you can bet he didn’t think this was a good idea!

No, they can only possibly collect for 90 days. By that period of time, the SSN has been cross checked and verified All funds received by an inmate are then processed for repayment of falsely gained benefits.

Well, if the government went after people for theft, the question about what Social Security actually is might come up more often.

Want to know why there’s nobody opposing or even worrying about OUR taxpayer $$ being pissed away like this:

Fugitive = illegal alien.

Game. Set. Match.

Got a better solution: End the illegal/unconstitutional TAX.

Then, I couldn’t care less.

Less govt = Freedom/Liberty/choice restored = Win Win

First you state,

Why did we even bother to “take over” the senate. It has done us no good. They vote like dims!!

and then you state,

Ted Cruz is my senator, and you can bet he didn’t think this was a good idea!

Do you really think that the senate has been “taken over” with Ted Cruz’s? I wish it were, but like I stated:

The majority and leadership are still RINO's voted in by moderate Republican areas, not Tea Party or other conservatives; but they (people like Cruz) are gaining strength each year.

The pendulum swings over and over again, and it will swing our way, so be hopeful, not apocalyptic – and keep on being “bothered” (as I am) and voting for Cruz!

No...I’m wishing it was and am just relieved that I don’t have to worry about how my senator will vote! He’s a total conservative!
