Intel Advocates For More H1B Visas; Lays Off American Workers
ValueWalk ^ | July 22, 2015 | Aman Jain

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) recently laid off more American workers, sending a strong and clear message that the company will continue its policy of hiring many foreign workers.. However, laying off American workers in large numbers to replace them with foreign labor has become a political debate, notes a report from Breitbart.

Is Intel being unfair to employees?

Business Insider notes that even though the chipmaker is adamant about laying off American workers, it is advocating for an increase in H1B visa workers. Back in March, Sen. Jeff Sessions, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest, rebuked Intel for swapping American workers with the cheaper foreign H1B visa holders.

It was also reported that Intel employees have been laid off based on a policy related to “the level of performance-based stock grants they received” instead of its standard annual review-based lay-off process. CEO Brian Krzanich reportedly acknowledged that this policy will create anger and dissatisfaction among some  devoted employees, but this is how a ‘meritocracy works.’ He went on to say that the company will continue this policy in future as well. What many employees do not know is if an employee is laid off at Intel, he will never be eligible for rehire by the company.

Intel and others favoring immigration reforms

Intel. along with other tech biggies such as Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB). are advocating for comprehensive immigration reform, along with urging lawmakers to support these increases. Intel supports the I-Squared bill, which seeks to significantly increase the number of H1B visa immigrants allowed in the country.

CNN Money reported that Intel is expected to cut its total workforce of 107,600 by 5%, which is 5,380 jobs. In an internal mail to employees last month, Krzanich stated the company would undertake a restructuring plan that may again require trimming of the workforce. Krzanich did not mention any specific number of job cuts, but a report by The Oregonian stated it would be approximately 3% of the total workers worldwide.

As of 12 pm EDT Wednesday, Intel shares were down 0.79% at $28.49. Year to date, the stock is down over 22%, while in the last twelve months it is down over 18%.

H1Bs are being abused and I’m not defending them. But there are 2 other big issues (in my 30+ years in technology)

* The government makes it hard/expensive/unattractive to hire/employ/fire employees. Contractors (H1B or otherwise) are a better business decision in many cases.

* Too many employees think the business/project should revolve around them. The idea of giving 40 hours work for 40 hours pay a week seems to be dead. Many employees brag about “working” 50+ hour weeks. But, after 5+ hours lunch, another 5 in the break room, and 10 on the computer or personal calls they’ve barely worked 30. And too many new grads think their 4 years of education in “new technology” trumps my 30 years in a wide variety of technologies. It can be hard to convince them to do what is needed for the project (e.g. another few hours of our time wasted as I watch them fail in their plan then do what I told them).

p.s. I currently work for myself and will work 7:30-6 today. So I can say I’m giving my employer 40+ hours this week even though I’m posting here during work hours. :)

The ONLY purpose of H1B visa is cheap labor for rich “American” business owners.

No it isn't, they're paid the same amount, they're required to be paid equal wages.

Where is Trump on stealing the best jobs from Americans and giving them away to foreigners through H1B VISAS?

Just recently left Intel after training my 3 ... count them ...3 Muslim and Indian replacements. Intel Arizona (and Folsom) is Muslim central ... at least with the people who are in my old fairly large department. They get into management and then get rid of all the American workers and replace them with there own. Seen it multiple times in my 30+ year career in the industry

H-1B Is Designed to Allow Employers to Pay Foreign Workers Extremely Low Wages

Yes Democrat_media is correct and Yes Cruz voted to fast track three secret trade deals. One of which does as Democrat_media media describes. However Cruz got very lucky when the House did not pass the "deal" the Senate passed. So after Ted got severely beaten about the head and shoulders by conservative grass roots he found a reason to vote against the bill the House sent to the Senate. The House bill passed the Senate by 1 vote so Cruz's second chance no vote did not matter. A no vote on cloture the first time would have mattered.

Ted sided with the globalists with it mattered.

Noted (and approved).

The government makes it hard/expensive/unattractive to hire/employ/fire employees.

Agreed - but the right answer is not to screw those American employees by allowing their displacement by low-salary indentured serfs.

The idea of giving 40 hours work for 40 hours pay a week seems to be dead.

I've heard the same about H-1Bs.

RE”Obamatrade (TPP) gives them the H1B visas and more.

This TTP Obamatrade deal is a trojan horse. It’s disguised as “free trade” What It really allows is for Obama to flood the USA with an unlimited number of 3rd world immigrants...
http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/immigration/item/20710-obama-gop-trade-scheme-includes-unrestricted-immigration

“Trade in Services” means they can import any number of 3d world workers from any occupation to take away any job from an American , IT ,trades, medical etc. . This is a whole new attack against Americans perpetrated by the anti-American communist Obama.

Only Trump can save America now.”

* * * *

Actually replacement of Americans at all levels of employment have been part of so called ‘Free Trade’ agreements since the grandaddy of them NAFTA.

One goal of ‘Free Trade’ is global unimpeded access to ‘natural persons’. All Free Trade agreement over ride US immigration law and mandate access to guest workers regardless of the unemployment situation. All NIV’s, non immigrant visas are riddled with loop holes and any minimal requirements are enforced using the ‘honor system’.

ObamaTrade merely codifies into ‘law’ what has been going on for decades under both -D’s and -R’s.

Why shouldn’t American companies be allowed to get the best talent

H1-B is not about "the best talent" - it's about low-salary indentured serfs.

Nice to know Americans are valued by the Corporates/s

These corporations want it all ways - they want labor at third world prices but sell their products to buyers with first world incomes.

Morally, they should have to draw their labor from the same market they want to sell their products in.

Independent minded Americans who are inclined to vote for a conservative and favor limited government are found in the affluent suburbs. [...] The way to destroy the suburbs is to eliminate the two things essential to their existence: good paying jobs and cheap energy. [...] The Chamber of Commerce is willingly playing along as the bosses get to keep their perks and privileges. They are more comfortable in socializing with their political and financial counterparts in the USA and around the globe than they are with any of us.

Excellent post!

No they are not. The ‘prevailing wage’ requirement uses a wage designed to be way under market rate.

There have been H-1B visas approved for as low as $5.00 per hour.

Even apart from morality, that's the only practical long-term option. But too many corporations' views don't extend past the end of the current fiscal quarter.

I've heard the same about H-1Bs.

All the H-1Bs I've worked with were through a big consulting company and they've all been productive 40+ hours a week (as long as they have specific details on what to do). If they don't they'll be replaced.

The times I've seen problems is when the team lead/manager doesn't know how to manage them - give them enough work and details. Some projects (ones without good requirements) do not lend themselves to that and need more interaction with the business and independent thought the whole time and H-1B (or offshore) are bad options.

That's just my experience and may be off in other types of businesses (I'm mostly IT for non-IT companies).
