It’s binding as an act within the legal structure. But things not in the oath aren’t necessarily eliminated from the obligation. We could drop the “truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth” from being sworn in and you could still be charged with perjury for lying on the stand. These people have agreed to be US citizens. If you’re a US citizen and in the right age bracket you must register for the draft and serve if you get drafted, whether or not that was in your citizenship oath doesn’t change the fact that those are the rules for US citizens.

I was speaking more in general terms of compliance with oaths of any kind.

There appears to be zero expectation that anyone who takes an oath of makes any kind of pledge is held accountable for doing it.

Depends on the circumstances. There’s certainly accountability for sworn testimony. Part of the problem is we throw so many oaths around for no particular reason. When I got a student aid job in college I had to sign some silly “won’t try to over throw the country” oath since they got money from the fed, I don’t even know if it only applied while I was still working there. That became kind of a political panacea for a while, make em swear and oath. But the fact is the more often you make people take oaths the less meaning they have, especially when there’s no choice in the matter. If you want oaths to have meaning then step one is to stop throwing them around in a meaningless manner.
