I disagree with this premise. "Diversity" has been in the liberal playbook for many years. No one can point to any serious data or studies that prove "diversity" improves an organization, business or body of people, only that "it does." People that question diversity for diversity's sake are considered racist, homophobic, mysogenist, xenophobes, dull, etc.
Diversity is mongrelization.
A race to the lowest common denominator.

I don’t know if current pop music is as bad as I think it is but it is bad enough that I don’t want to think about it. If Taylor Swift is today’s equivalent of Patsy Cline there is truly no hope for this country.
For a time I used as a tagline, “IDIOCRACY is a documentary”, now it is much worse, IDIOCRACY is beginning to look more like the good old days. Just when I think the depths have been reached a new sinkhole opens up.
Management: "Diversity doesn't just mean different race, ethnicity, or sex. It's about a different perspective on life. Your experiences, your education, your knowledge of the subject matter, all of these contribute to the diverse workforce. Diversity can't be measured by only race, ethnicity, or sex.
IYAS9YAS: Okay, how do we measure ourselves against our diversity policy when you can't objectify diversity of education, experiences, or life perspectives?
Management: We have to rely on race, ethnicity, and sex.
Diversity: You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
It means you go from a safe society to a rape society.
Diversity is the assumption that Caucasian Americans are an amorphous mass, no diversity in beliefs or culture, and inferior as well.
Diversity is the assumption that everyone else is better, from more melanin to those from other countries to sexual abnormalities. The norm is thus inferior and wrong.
But no one says the Chinese have Chinese privilege in their own nation, where they are a demographic majority.
And liberals don’t discuss that in every culture, there’s an advantage to speaking the majority language and being fluent in its culture, because you fit in better and have less friction.
Diversity means the forced abandonment of all standards of conduct, competence, performance, and ability.

Agreed. The term has been in play for at least thirty-years. When I very first heard the term it actually applied to “nature” (as in, biodiversity), fifty-years ago. The term was not intended to be applied to man and society. But naturally the left adopted it during the explosion of political correctness. Just hearing the word became, for me personally, a red flag. Diversity=Socialism.
