Absolutely. Unfortunately many people are virtually threatened by their employers if they don't contribute to United Way so their companies can brag about their contributions.
I worked for a very small company, less than 10 people in the office, that had plaques going back I don’t know how many years for 100% participation. I started working for the company not long after the Boy Scouts/United Way issues started and I would not sign up donate. I felt kind of bad about it, but explained to my boss why I chose not to. He understood and was fine with it. Now I’m really glad I didn’t cave.

That was common at the Fortune 100 company I worked for. Happy to be retired.
