Feds end prosecution of Barry Bonds without conviction

SAN FRANCISCO-

After a nearly decade-long steroids prosecution, Barry Bonds emerged victorious Tuesday when federal prosecutors dropped what was left of their criminal case against the career home runs leader.

The government's pursuit of Bonds ended quietly with a one-paragraph motion by the U.S. Department of Justice announcing Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. will not ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the appellate decision that overturned Bonds' obstruction of justice conviction.

....snip....

"William Portanova, a former federal prosecutor now in private practice, disagreed, saying the prosecution acted as a deterrent despite the lack of a conviction. "There's no question that the world paid attention to this case, so win, lose or draw, any potential steroid abusers saw that there's a chance of getting tangled in the court system," he said.

Gee, I guess it doesn't matter to Mr. Portanova that his conviction for Obstruction of Justice was overturned.

Bonds did his part in that series against a better team

He hit 4 HR. 11 hits and 8 RBI.

Oh my, and I wonder how much it costed the American taxpayer for all of this nonsense. Probably would have been a lot easier and saved a pile of money by just simply typing an asterisk next to Bonds’ name and records.

Bonds was an animal. I don’t know how the Angels ever pitched to him. Jarrod Washburn challenged Bonds in Game 1 and Bonds hit a 418 foot HR off of him. I think Tim Salmon said that was the longest home run he had ever seen in his career.

It was a great series. 2002’s Game 6 is probably the most exciting baseball game I’ve ever seen.

My Bonds baseball cards just went up in value.

It’s a good day in Dodge City.

The Giants led that game 5-0 in the 7th inning.

Lost 6-5.

"the longest home run he had ever seen in his career."

Bonds would regularly hit them into the Bay in SF. It's 400ft to clear the upper wall in the most pitcher friendly park in America.

I think he did it about 60 times.

How much did it cost Bonds to defend himself?

"Barry Bonds*"

Shouldn't that be followed by the number 762?

418 foot homer is nothing, 15 feet past the CF wall, best check that stat.

“The Giants led that game 5-0 in the 7th inning. “

Scott Spiezio’s three-run home run in the bottom of the 7th. That was the fulcrum that shifted the entire Series. My friends who were at the game said that was the loudest explosion of sound they had ever heard when that ball cleared the fence. Between the Thunder Sticks and the roar of the crowd their ears were ringing.

I just pulled the number off of an article on Washburn challenging Bonds with the homer being the result. Tim Salmon certainly seemed to think it could have been much longer.
