Real-estate developer Donald Trump is being criticized left and right for disparaging Sen. John McCain's (R-Arizona) military record, but the controversy has yet to affect his standing in the polls.
A new Monmouth University poll of GOP voters in Iowa, released Monday, found Trump in second place with 13% of the vote behind only Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's (R) 22%.
Trump already surged to first place in a number of national polls, but he has lagged a bit in Iowa. Accordingly, his second-place showing here doesn't represent a drop.
However, what's even more interesting is that the pollster said there was no difference between Trump's support before and after last weekend's controversy. Trump initially claimed at an event in Iowa that McCain, who was held captive for more than five years during the Vietnam War, was not a war hero. He quickly reversed himself, but the comment still ignited a media firestorm.
"Trump's statement about John McCains status as a war hero, made Saturday morning at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, IA, generated almost universal backlash from his rivals," the Monmouth write-up of the poll said, "but does not seem to have had an immediate impact on his support among Hawkeye State Republicans."
The statement continued: "In interviews conducted Thursday and Friday, Trump garnered 13% of the vote to 19% for Walker. This is only slightly different than results from the Saturday and Sunday interviews, which put Trump at 13% to 25% for Walker."

...why isn’t this working? Isn’t McCain like a god to those Republithugs? OH NO! Is Trump really a Teabagger icon? Quick, let’s change our attack on him...
Ahh, yes, the liberals in the media are running around with their heads cut off. Something must be done about these awkward questions about illegals, free trade, Iran, Iraq, and the rest... OOOh, I know, quick, some reporter rush out and ask Trump about gay boy scout leaders! THAT’LL END HIM!
Nobody likes McCain. He has milked his own POW experience one time too many. He keeps insulting his own party’s voters. There is little downside in attacking him.
They'll just step it up a couple more notches, I'm sure.
The thing is it takes usually about three days for fall out to affect polling numbers, whether they rise or fall. I want to see his numbers hold through at least the beginning of the debates and longer.
Better yet-What about muslim inbreeding?
When he endorsed Obama in the fall of 2008 it was so lame.
You can bet they had to cook the books to keep him from increasing his share.
Pray America is waking
Most of these politicians running are lawyers and politicians who have never held a real job nor started a business.
Trump has started his own business and literally reached the top the world in business, success and life. He’s a business man and entrepreneur ,the guys who built this country like Ford, Edison etc. He tells it like it is especially about illegals.
It’s great that in Iowa 2 non-lawyers are leading.
And one isn't Ivy League...double win!
Oh dear. What are the media lackies going to do next? How will the National Review cope?
“You have nothing to fear from an 0bama administration”
McShame handed the election away with that quote.
So with all the bad things McShame has done, Trump says it looks like you pissed on yourself and Trump is the bad guy?
Bwahahahaha ! I love it !
If we could only get that useless Bush off the ballot. :^{
It is not just MSM getting discouraged.
It is also extremely frustrating for bots of other candidates. They can’t believe a novice politician is leading them! They are angered and frothing at the mouth.
Bush bots are mad.
Rubio bots are mad.
Walker bots are frustrated
Paul bots are smoking more joints.
Cruz bots seem to have made peace with Trump.
Don’t seem to see many posts from Carson bots.
Those are probably the quiet group.
The rest of them don’t matter, they have no chance.
That, right there, made me chuckle ;-)
And, I do agree with your entire post.
He's tearing to pieces his civilian, Congressional record ... and rightly so
B'bye, Juan
