So what was the “first supermarket chain”? I remember Marsh’s in Indianapolis in 1960. I presume they are not citing IGA, when existed long before supermarkets.

A&P.

And this isn't the first time they've filed for bankruptcy.

IGA did not exist before A&P.

What is now A&P began in 1859; it established a small chain of retail tea and coffee stores in New York City and a national mail order business. It grew to 70 stores by 1878. In the late 19th century, A&P, still a tea and coffee company, became the country's first grocery chain. At the turn of the century [that is, 1899], it operated almost 200 stores.
--Wikipedia.

IGA formed in response to complete dominance by A&P, in 1926. At that time it included about 100 stores.

I remember when I had to cross a union picket line blocking a family run grocery chain.
The union thugs for hire were crazed that I dare make my way into the store for a service call.
I spoke a head creep who boasted that he made over $100 / day picketing for the union and also got a use of a free “company” car.
I tried to explain that the grocery business has a very low profit margin.
He yelled back that it too bad, Everyone should be unionized!
Sadly amusing that unions have parasitically all but killed themselves and host businesses. (Except for government).
Even FDR was against unionized gov’t workers.

We’re not talking about the Federalist Papers, here. It’s a blog where the authors won’t even identify themselves . . . there’s your “credibility.”

So what was the “first supermarket chain”?

No... my family started the first chain way back in 1891. Well, it wasn't really a chain until my great grandfather and his partner merged with another group, but that was still before A&P came on the scene.

Two lasting impressions from my time in Michigan.

1) Kroger had bailed out of the Flint-Saginaw market in the early 80’s. They sold their stores to an independent non-union operator named George Kessel. When I moved there, nearly a decade later, there were STILL UFCW pickets walking every one of his stores, every day.

2) Hamady, the 2nd oldest grocery chain in the state, went out of business after their second round of bankruptcy after their unions VOTED DOWN a last-ditch rescue package that would have made them part-owners of the company, but would have also required them to take a pay cut.

A&P ? I thought they went T. U. many years ago. Certainly around here, NC.

Why do you write under a(n accurate) pseudonym?

I’ve followed Zerohedge.com for sometime, and appreciate their conservative Austrian-economic point of view on business, and micro / macro economics, using verifiable data sources.
Their writers likely use pseudonyms to preserve professional reputation which could be harmed by the bearish, and sometimes doom goldbug conservative tone of the publication.

A&P - Atlantic & Pacific. Home of "8 O'Clock" and "Red Circle" and ... coffee brands.

When I didn’t know Tyler Durden was a character in The Fight Club, I tried to figure-out “his” economic philosophy. It was all over the map. I had a good chuckle when I learned he wasn’t one person.
