The Justice Department announced Thursday that its Swiss Bank Program snared another three financial institutions in its battle against offshore tax evasion.
Mercantil Bank will pay a $1.2 million fine, Banque Cantonale Neuchâteloise (BCN) will pay $1.1 million and Nidwaldner Kantonalbank will fork over $856,000 the federal government.
By joining the program, the banks will also give federal investigators a full accounting of their work with U.S. customers, including detailed information, and provide information on other banks.
The Justice Department also revealed that Mercantil Bank had a toll-free line for U.S. customers, and offered code names for accounts. BCN allowed account holders at the Swiss banking giant UBS and other financial institutions to tran
This is not good by half.
I have decidedly mixed feelings about this. On the one hand I am appalled at one of the last bastions of privacy being destroyed by our Socialist state. On the other, as a tax payer who recognizes that YES there are legitimate functions of government that need to be funded, I have zero sympathy for tax cheats.
It’s terrible. If you support the heavy-handed tactics of the US gov. in this matter, you are basically saying that you don’t give a crap about national sovereignty. That swords cuts two ways.
If "Justice" was REALLY Justice, this might be good, but since it has become part of 0bama's gestappo, along with the IRS, this is not necessarily good.
damnable Whiggery?
“damnable Whiggery?”
I’m a little more reactionary than most on here.
Indeed it does. But let’s be honest, the US has a long history of preaching national sovereignty, until it becomes inconvenient.
In the US Whigs were patriots, as distinguished from loyalist Torries.
As a Christian monarchist I would dispute the term “patriots.” But in any event, 200+ years is long enough that the issue is settled and I accept that this particular bell cannot be un-rung. Given how far Britain has sunk under the weight of modern day Whiggery, America is probably better off, at least for now.

Nut-job Conspiracy Theory Ping!
To get onto The Nut-job Conspiracy Theory Ping List you must threaten to report me to the Mods if I don't add you to the list...
3000 tyrants less than 1 mile away
That’s democracy. The US is not a democracy.
Will the Hillary donor list figure? I did not think so. The DOJ will pick and choose. And this is why this is Bs
Exactly.
hmmmm
[ I have zero sympathy for tax cheats. ]
I have zero sympathy for people who trespass on property, but that doesn’t stop Obama from wanting to forgive their crimes, so why can’t we get amnesty for tax evasion too while we are at it.
Then you must really hate the IRS and the SS admin and all those who run them - hopefully even more than those who try to shelter themselves from an out-of-control tax system which considers it everyone's duty to submit whatever bureaucrats consider "their fair share of everyone else's money".
I have some liberal acquaintances and one told me he had no problem paying his fair share of the taxes - then I found out he and his wife were cheating like hell by making improvements and such to their main dwelling and writing it off as costs against a rental they owned and other such tricks. I find that those who make the claim about moral superiority vis-a-vis taxes, are either not educated, or cheats and liars themselves. Hope it doesn't include you but my RADAR always goes up when someone on a conservative website espouses the Left's sacred motets.
