To the PC deniers of Cherokee slaveholders, an article by NPR (recent) that the Cherokee want to expel families of former slaves (that they owned, BLACK) from the tribe.

The Cherokee documents where they finally sided with the confederacy are interesting in that regard- the reasons they cite for joining the confederacy include the fear that slavery would be outlawed.

In Mississippi, before and after Statehood in 1817, Choctaws owned slaves, most slaves were black, but some were indians captured from the alabama tribes that fought with the British against the choctaws in the French and Indian wars. Choctaws also aligned with the south during the war of northern aggression (as granny was prone to say). Said all that, but you couldn’t get one of 10 african americans to give up a slot at the Silverstar in Philadelphia. But they will vote against the Mississippi state flag in the school board meetings.
