Mining and manufacturing in space will be the leap forward. Deep space manned missions will require enormous ships we can't get to orbit.WE CAN get a monstrosity into orbit. TODAY....but we do not have the guts to do it.
We can launch such a vehicle with Project Orion type device. I suggest the launch site at Mecca.
