Remembering Freddie Gray. Theres now a Baltimore youth center that honors the 25-year-old who died in police custody.
The Freddie Gray Youth Empowerment Center is located just 10 miles from where Gray lived, serving as a memorial and symbol of hope. It will ideally set Baltimores youth up for success in a city working to rebuild after being rocked by violence and chaos following the death of Freddie Gray.
Theres another side of Baltimore that the uprising didnt show, said Dr. Jamal Bryant, Empowerment Temple Church pastor.
Bryants Empowerment Temple Church dedicated the center to the citys kids, giving them a place to prosper and secure a brighter future.
I really believe its got to be bigger than a new police chiefwhat is going to happen to the economic opportunities in our city and we hope this is going to be the epicenter for Sandtown Winchester, Bryant said.
Amid one of the most deadly years in Baltimore, the city has already seen more than 100 deathsa major spike compared to this time last year.
Community leaders and elected officials say now is the time to make a difference.

Be sure to read the comments after the story. Some are a real hoot, such as saying the creation of this center is like establishing the Michael Vick Animal Shelter.
I wonder if they will deal crack and heroin out of the church?
Wow, what a wonderful role model!
I know. They couldn’t find a black scientist, police officer, or someone worthy of honor? No, they had to pick a drug-dealing thug. Very sad.
Okay, let’s honor a criminal by naming a youth center after him while we relocate the remains of a Confederate general so as not to offend those who didn’t know who he was until a few weeks ago.
Freddie Gray was a drug dealer and a criminal. I’m sure there will be plenty of drug dealers and criminals congregating there, so the name is appropriate.
Why not just dedicate it to Thug Culture?
“They couldnt find a black scientist, police officer, or someone worthy of honor?”
How about the PRESIDENT??? Absolutely pathetic.....
I went to the pastor’s website. Looks like a clown show. Their greater concern is political activism than saving people.
Church webpage has his picture displayed, but nothing about the Gospel - what does that tell you?
“...what is going to happen to the economic opportunities in our city and we hope this is going to be the epicenter for Sandtown Winchester, Bryant said.”
Gonna be a whole lotta jobs created by naming your youth center for Freddie Gray, a drug dealer.
The yute center.
Over here we have “negotiating drug deals” classes
Over here we have the crack rock cooking area
Over there we have blunt rolling 101
Over there we have the Obama [pbuh] shrine
And right over here we have federal government job recruiters
Memorialize the criminal but take down the Confederate flag.
Makes perfect liberal sense.
You need cases like this to show the absolute hopelessness of any kind of assimilation; the Klan couldn’t have marginalized blacks any better than they did themselves. Every foreigner washing up here passes them very quickly...
This guy Jamal makes the Pope look good by comparison
Should have named it after the first African to invent the wheel.
Good riddance Freddy Gray! Your dead...tough luck...you got culled...now stay that way!
Black culture is a parody of itself. They can put the youth center in the same building as the ex-felon crime prevention group and save the cops an extra trip.
Nathan Bedford Forrest is way more worthy to have a youth center named for him. By the end of his life, you could definitely say he did more for black folks. (Some of us don’t consider selling drugs to be helpful.)
The Freddie Gray Youth Violence Center — so blacks can organize to attack whites. The ‘church’ sounds like a cult...
