Sweet Cakes by Melissa crowdfunder breaks record with $352K
The Washington Times ^ | July 14, 2015 | Valerie Richardson

A crowdfunding campaign for the Oregon bakery Sweet Cakes by Melissa has set a site record by raising $352,500 in about two months after being kicked off the GoFundMe website, far exceeding the initial goal of $150,000.

Jesse Wellhoefer, founder of Continue to Give, said the Sweet Cakes effort has raised more than any previous campaign on behalf of individuals in the three-year-old crowdfunding website’s history.

Continue to Give also handles ongoing fundraising for nonprofit organizations as well as mobile and kiosk tithing for churches.

GoFundMe, the nation’s largest crowdfunder, removed a campaign for Sweet Cakes by Melissa in April after receiving complaints from gay-marriage supporters. The bakery’s owners, Aaron and Melissa Klein, are locked in a legal battle with the state for refusing to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony, citing their religious beliefs.

Mr. Wellhoefer said his company had received “lots and lots” of complaints about the Sweet Cakes crowdfunding campaign, but that he has refused to remove it.

“Lots of people have been asking us to take it off,” Mr. Wellhoefer said. “Our response has been, ‘Thank you for your concern, have a great day and God bless you.’”

OK, from what I see under Oregon law up to 20% of any punitive damage award goes to the plaintiff’s lawyer. After that, the state gets 60% of the remainder, the plaintiff gets 30%, and the Attorney General gets 10%. So if this is a judgment of punitive damages, the most the plaintiffs can recover is $33,120. But I keep seeing the word “fine.” We all know who collects fines.

Whatever the case, I surely hope this all get reversed and no one gets anything.

I can think of a few appropriate courses of action against this fascist commie leftist Commissioner Avakian but I won’t state them here on this great forum.

Thanks for that link, just the synopsis is sickening where it says “damages for emotional and mental suffering.”

Wow. With that much raised, they can put the fine into escrow and pay for an appeal. That way, if they win the appeal, they can just take the money back out of escrow instead of having to try to collect it.

/NOT LEGAL ADVICE, I’ve just had to do this dance before myself

They should donate the money to a religious charity that helps children and force the lesbians to fight that.

“See? Told you gays hate children.”

I agree with your not one dime for the lesbian bullies. I will be thrilled in the family at Sweet Cakes keeps the entire $352,500, but as long as not one penny goes to the thugs before they die of AIDS or some other self-inflicted disease, I’ll be happy.

Incidentally, I deal with a lot of entrepreneurs. Used to recommend GoFundMe. NEVER AGAIN.

Popman posted the below link and at the end of the synopsis on first page it says the Commissioner awarded Complainants, $75K and $60K, respectively, in damages....

I hear you. I’m not disputing what you posted because I’m not really clear what the deal is.

I hope the Kleins use the funds to fight the good fight against the abusive queers.

At least the Klein's will have the funds to fight this and hopefully win their appeal so these two lesbians don't get a dime.

Are you kidding? It will likely take millions. This is the type of backing supplied to recruited sodomites.

I’ve read on FR and elsewhere that the Klein’s house would be foreclosed on to pay the fine if the money isn’t paid.

Thanks..that sounds correct. I’m glad that Melissa is getting these funds. I do hope that they are totally transparent, and post online exactly how they are using them...who gets what, how much, and why..

Someone please direct me to the actual complaint of the 40 something damages included in the lesbians’ complaint against Sweetcakes. I need it for an on-going discussion. Thank you.

Here's is the 2 lesbians list of grievances of whoa-is-me against a Mom and Pop store for not making them a wedding cake for a gay marriage against their fundamental religious right, but said they would do birthday cakes and other non-religious cakes for the couple, if requested;

The lesbian couple listed several dozen examples of “emotional and mental suffering” in their complaint to the Oregon Labor Commissior, including:
“acute loss of confidence,”
“doubt,”
“excessive sleep,”
“felt mentally raped"
"dirty and shameful,”
“high blood pressure,”
“impaired digestion,”
“loss of appetite,”
“migraine headaches,”
“pale and sick at home after work,”
“resumption of smoking habit,” “stunned,”
“surprise,”
“uncertainty,”
“weight gain,”
“worry.”

"No doctor, counselor, or psychiatrist confirmed any of these symptoms." The commissioner merely accepted these claims at face value even though his own ruling stated that Laurel Bowman-Cryer was frequently an unreliable witness:

This is a perfect example why I keep talking with my wife about special victims class wanting more and more and more. My best guess, they won't prevail and hopefully set back their vicim-hood agenda quite a bit.

Thanks much for posting the list, I’d seen it earlier but didn’t remember where.

The commissioner should be tarred, feathered and run out of his seat on a rail. The turkey was appointed to an open seat by the corrupt Guv. Kitzhaber and then elected by leftists in OR when the election came up.

Like you I believe this turkeys award will be overturned, it’s a flagrant violation of the 1st Amendment rights of the business owners.
