Would make no sense for anyone to buy hiking shorts and pair of hiking boots — for one trip to the wilderness.

Actually, that's not true. Cars in parking lots at trailheads are notoriously vulnerable to theft and vandalism, as are remote cabins. And I would suspect that the perps in those cases are mostly white.
