Why Are Our Parks So White?
NY Times ^ | JULY 10, 2015 | GLENN NELSON

SEATTLE — MOUNT RAINIER stands sentry over Seattle. On clear days, the mountain is the dominant backdrop, particularly in the city’s southeast, where its most racially diverse neighborhoods embrace their majestic setting with names like Rainier Valley and Rainier Beach.

Michelle Perry lives in an adjoining neighborhood and travels to work on Rainier Avenue South. The looming mountain enchants and beguiles nearly the entire way. She knows she can keep driving south and visit Rainier and the national park that surrounds it. Ms. Perry, 58, an African-American, has an idea about what she’d find up there — mosquitoes, which she hates, and bears, cougars and wolves, which she fears.

“The mountains are beautiful to watch,” she said, pausing for effect, “from a distance.”

As it approaches its centennial on Aug. 25, 2016, the National Park Service says it wants to encourage people like Ms. Perry to visit. It has its work cut out for it.

Jeff Cheatham grew up in southeast Seattle, and still lives in Mount Rainier’s shadow. Yet, he said of Mount Rainier and other national parks, “I’ve never been, and never thought about going.” A 29-year-old African-American writer, Mr. Cheatham said he didn’t even know what a national park was, or what he would be likely to find at one. “As far as I know, it’s a big field of grass,” he said.

A neighbor, Carla DeRise, has been to Mount Rainier and other parks, and is game to go again. She just can’t get any of her friends to come along. They are worried about unfriendly white people, hungry critters and insects, and unforgiving landscapes, said Ms. DeRise, 51, an African-American. So she mainly hikes alone, albeit with some anxiety. “I don’t have a weapon,” she quipped. “Yet.”

If God wanted the mountains to look like da hood He’d have colored them with grafitti.

Perhaps we should go back to “pale face”.

These folks should connect with Outdoor Afro. We met a black hiking group from this club on a Hill 88 / Coastal Trail hike on Mother's Day. Really nice people and they didn't seem intimidated by all the scary white people on the trails.

Blacks are only 14% or so of the population. These LIB idiots are going to spread those relatively few very thin if they have their way. They want to force them into housing in the suburbs, force them into schools...now force them to attend the national parks. We “lived” in WDC for 30+ years. We hardly ever saw blacks in the museums (especially the art museums)...and the museums were all free admission and conveniently located together. WDC is feral-infested but I guess they choose to not go to the museums . Once again, LIB degenerates want to do social experiments with a free society..and want to make people do things. Fascists.

Hey NYT staff, maybe the folks should get it to the Hamptons more often. How about building a public bus stop on the beach

Or Section 8 housing?

And even more scary, groups of Japanese and Chinese tourists.

Exactly. Anyone who has been to a National park recently knows that there are many (many) Asian visitors. Funny how they’re not afraid.

The common element that I do notice when I see black people in these elements is that there is usually a father involved.

I notice exactly the same thing here in the rural parks and historical sites here in Pennsylvania. I also observe that said demographic behaves in a civilized manner no different from the rest of us.

Look mostly green to me. Do we have to beg black folks to come to a park so we can assuage our white guilt?

Actually, Martha's Vineyard has a long tradition of black vacationers, over 100 years. It's somewhat ironic in that MV has a statue that is a tribute to the Confederate soldier.

But then they would need a free car to drive there, right? Because the optics of busing them would NOT be good...

Black churches routinely hire buses for outings to Jones Beach State Park, why not the Hamptons?

This suggests an alarming disconnect.

Boy, that article perfectly illustrates the colossal absurdity of the worried white people reading the NY Times.

Everything they find "alarming" is so dopey and concocted and trivial - not enough soul on the national park visitor list.

Honestly, could there be a less "alarming" problem on the face of the earth?!

We all know the national parks are full of unfriendly white people, right?

Well duh. Haven't you watched any Hollywood movies?

I guess that’s why when I go to a classical music performance in DC or any other “chocolate” city, there will typically as many (or more) blacks in the orchestra as in the audience.

I was at a Springsteen concert a couple of years ago. 75,000 people in the audience, and I can say without hyperbole, that he had more black people in his band than in the crowd.
