The sole criterion required of Catholics regarding the Pope is obedience to the heir of St. Peter when he issues a definitive teaching on faith and morals. Popes, both good and bad, have ruminated in print on many topics. Catholics are free to disagree with such issuances.
Pope JPII taught strongly against the death penalty, based on the assumption that "advanced societies" can successfully isolate hardened criminals so as to eliminate any danger to society from them. The recent prison break from one of the USA's most secure penitentiaries conclusively proves that supposition to be incorrect.
