The Stagger Lee YouTube you linked to was great. It was the original/best version. Thanks!

Stagger Lee - Lloyd Price

The night was clear and the moon was yellow
And the leaves came tumbling down

I was standing on the corner when I heard my bulldog bark
He was barkin’ at the two men who were gamblin’ in the dark
It was Stagger Lee and Billy, two men who gambled late
Stagger Lee threw seven, Billy swore that he threw eight

Stagger Lee told Billy, “I can’t let you go with that
You have won all my money and my brand new Stetson hat”
Stagger Lee went home and he got his forty-four
Said, “I’m goin’ to the barroom just to pay that debt I owe”
Go Stagger Lee

Stagger Lee went to the barroom and he stood across the barroom door
He said, “Now nobody move” and he pulled his forty-four
“Stagger Lee”, cried Billy, “Oh, please don’t take my life
I’ve three little children and a very sickly wife”

Stagger Lee shot Billy oh, he shot that poor boy so bad
Till the bullet came through Billy and it broke the bartender’s glass

Go Stagger Lee
Go Stagger Lee
Go Stagger Lee

Yep, that describes it, blue too, and with a jack on the side that doubled as a guitar amp for my cheapo guitar. Got screamed at every time I plugged in so I usually practiced unplugged. Folded up just like a suitcase and not much bigger. I think I still have one of the plastic inserts to play a 45 on the small spindle without having to swap to the big one.

What was that song that featured the cutting down of all the ancient Oak trees on the UK coast?

Probably Bonny Portmore.

They hae slain the Earl o' Moray
An' Lady Mondegreen....

Oh, may that woman-murdering King James be damned!

Have fun everyone!

1952 Vincent Black Lightning/ Richard Thompson

Oh, says Red Molly to James, "That's a fine motorbike
A girl could feel special on any such like"
Says James to Red Molly, "My hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952"

And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme
And he pulled her on behind
And down to Vauxhill, they did ride

Oh, says James to Red Molly, "Here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man
For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine
Now I'm twenty-one years, I might make twenty-two
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

"Come down, come down, Red Molly, " called Sergeant McRae
"For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside
Oh, come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside"

When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
And said I'll give you my Vincent to ride

Says James, "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves's just won't do
Ahh, they don't have a soul like a Vincent 52"
Oh, he reached for her hand then he slipped her the keys
Said, "I've got no further use for these
I see angels on Ariels, in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home"

And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride

Richard Thompson, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning"

on his 1991 album Rumor and Sigh

Lawyers, Guns and Money by Warren Zevon

Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy

Well, he went down to dinner in his Sunday best
Excitable boy, they all said
And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

He took in the four a.m. show at the Clark
Excitable boy, they all said
And he bit the usherette's leg in the dark
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

And he took little Suzie to the Junior Prom
Excitable boy, they all said
And he raped her and killed her, then he took her home
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

And after ten long years they let him out of the home
Excitable boy, they all said
And he dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

detailed analysis *here*

When I suggested this as a theme to Fatima, I really had no idea there would be so many songs suggested.

Funniest suggestion was: "Hail to the Chief" (in view of the current office holder)

I had to look it up to confirm my hunch/theory:

The song was written for the movie, but John Ford hated the song and did not put it in. It was then released as a single.

Dixie Chicks ~ Goodbye Earl

“Goodbye Earl”

Mary Anne and Wanda were the best of friends
All through their high school days
Both members of the 4H Club
Both active in the FFA

After graduation Mary Anne went out
lookin’ for a bright new world
Wanda looked all around this town
and all she found was Earl

Well, it wasn’t two weeks
after she got married that
Wanda started gettin’ abused
She put on dark glasses
and long sleeved blouses
And make-up to cover her bruise

Well, she finally got the nerve to file for divorce
She let the law take it from there
But Earl walked right through that restraining order
And put her in intensive care

Right away Mary Anne flew in from Atlanta
On a red eye midnight flight
She held Wanda’s hand and they worked out a plan
And it didn’t take them long to decide
That Earl had to die

Goodbye, Earl
Those black-eyed peas?
They tasted all right to me, Earl
You’re feeling weak?
Why don’t you lay down and sleep, Earl
Ain’t it dark?
Wrapped up in that tarp, Earl

The cops came by to bring Earl in
They searched the house high and low
Then they tipped their hats
and said “Thank You, ladies, if you hear from him let us know”

Well, the weeks went by and spring turned to summer
And summer faded into fall
And it turns out he was a missing person
who nobody missed at all

So the girls bought some land
and a roadside stand
Out on Highway 109
They sell Tennessee ham
and strawberry jam,
And they don’t lose any sleep at night
‘Cause Earl had to die

Goodbye Earl
We need a break
Let’s go out to the lake, Earl
We’ll pack a lunch
And stuff you in the trunk, Earl
Well, is that all right?
Good! Let’s go for a ride, Earl.
Hey

Well, hey hey hey
Ah, hey hey hey
Well, hey hey hey

I love that song!. Favorite line: "Red hair and black leather my favorite color scheme.

It also applies as well to my own sweetie, red-haired to a fair-thee-well [welsh family roots] and who was wearing a black leather pilot's/biker's jacket [she's both] the first time I met her. wasn't on a street corner or in a caf, though, though she's hot to visit the Ace on the NCR.

Icing on the cake: her last name's close enough to *Adie* for the song to fit. Around Halloween [our anniversary of that first meeting] we're going to change that. Or so goes the plan.

Her bikes, she's fond of the Honda VFR500's of which she has her original and two *parts queen* spares donors, as well as a Harley Sportster built the year she was born. I've got about 2/3 of a 1948 Vincint Rapide, and a new BMW R9T on order at the dealer. The build number from the factory has been issued, and the dealer tells me that shipping and Customs should put it here around...the end of October.

Yeah, there are happy endings sometimes. It averages out, if you help it just a bit.

It's so cool that you looked it up! Ford was such an incredible director, but if he didn't like something, or someone, I've read that he could be pretty stubborn!

As an odd sort of parallel, I thought, for instance, the theme from "Grease" should not have been in there, as it just didn't fit the film. But Pitney's song, with his distinctive voice, and the fiddle, would have been just perfect for "Liberty Valance"...
What a great thread!!

You know, those stereos really kicked it, especially for being portable! And those inserts: I got a record or two broken trying to get a metal one out! Plastic was a good idea there... Funny all the yelling “lower that damn thing!” The universal call of the POT: Parents of Teens! Eventually, as I got older, my parents and I began to like each other’s music!
