I grew up in rural Iowa and remember(with clarity) many farmers talking about how FDR saved them. They voted Dem for decades. As far as FDR losing the State I think it was the city influence. I looked to see if county by county results were posted on the net for those elections. Didn't find them in a quick Google search.

It’s true that a certain percent of Iowa farmers, usually Catholics, became Democrats who still trend Democrat in rural counties today. But Iowa was not especially friendly to the New Deal or socialism, especially compared to surrounding states.

Henry Wallace, Iowa’s most famous leftist and fabulously wealthy, never managed to get elected to anything in Iowa.
