Federal judge orders cancellation of Redskins’ trademark registrations
Washington Post ^ | 7/8/15 | Ian Shapira

The Washington Redskins lost the biggest legal and public relations battle yet in the war over the NFL team’s name after a federal judge on Wednesday ordered the cancellation of its federal trademark registrations, opposed for decades by Native American activists who call the moniker disparaging.

The cancellation, hailed by the activists as a “huge victory,” doesn’t go into effect until the team has exhausted the appeals process in the federal court system. And Redskins President Bruce Allen vowed Wednesday that the team would appeal.

“We are convinced that we will win on appeal as the facts and the law are on the side of our franchise that has proudly used the name Washington Redskins for more than 80 years,” Allen said in a statement.

But even if the Redskins ultimately take the case to the Supreme Court and lose, the team can still use “Redskins” and seek trademark protection under state law. The team has argued, however, that a cancellation of its trademarks could taint its brand and remove legal benefits that would protect it against copycat entrepreneurs.

-- If the trademark is cancelled, then anyone will be able to start using it. It will go from localized usage to nationwide. --

No. All the Redskins lose is some preferential treatment in suits against infringers. They can still sue infringers. Trademark exists independently of trademark registration.

Just like the Nazi Germany headquartered company, Bayer, lost the rights to ‘aspirin’.

Nice to know American companies are being overtly treated like Nazis...

Mighty whitey has rested on his laurels for a long time. We’ve had war declared on us by the feral blacks and still we do nothing. The criminal wetbacks have similarly declared war on us and we do nothing. We’re going to be assaulted and persecuted until we finally have to respond. I guess the only question is how much we’re willing to forfeit before we do the right thing?

Amen to that. And that’s coming from a Cowboys fan. I hope the Redskins fights this with the same vigor that they fight the Cowboys, Eagles and Giants. Screw this pc bs.

The end result will be more products with the Redskin logo. The counterfeiters will definitely sell them cheaper. Ha Ha

By rights, being based in DC, the team should be called, “Washington Thieving Crooked Bastards.”

That's reserved for the political ruling class that infests Washington, DC.

LOL!

Despite your rather insane promptings, and the incredibly gratuitous and improper use of the word “we”, one would think that even you could eventually grasp that the vast majority of citizens in the USA, and also the entire rest of the world, are really not interested in participating in “race/class/religious/political/financial” wars .

There should be no doubt that yet another World Wide War has already started.

The problem for the instigators, this time, is that the vast majority of humanity are not quite as willing to die for our self pronounced “leaders” benefit.

The fact that you have totally missed my point demonstrates that you are a really simply minded broad, aren’t you? Now, go iron my shirt! And don’t bother wasting my time with your juvenile drivel. You lack reading comprehension, but maybe you grasp my point this time?

Ah yes, well, what the Redskins have in those terms is sort of like an unrecorded note.
